Little League Lament

I guess something had to really annoy me to get me out of hibernation - and this is it:

Whose bright idea was it to run a bunch of little league games on the Sunday of Erev Shavuot??? The whole notion is just so, so wrong.

Why is it a wise idea to have people who will be ostensibly pulling all-nighters to learn for Shavuot spend the day leading up to it exhausting themselves by running around coaching/playing ball in 85-degree temperatures?

Also, did it occur to whichever shul youth directors or league organizers who planned the little league calendar that perhaps us mothers stuck in the kitchen simultaneously attempting to clean up from Shabbos and cook for Yom Tov might prefer to have an extra couple of pairs of hands available around the house to help out or to run errands?

If little league participants can get a week off for the Salute to Israel parade, there's no reason that the kids can't get another week off to properly prepare for the holiday of Matan Torah. There are some games scheduled for 3 PM on Sunday - which means there will actually be games in progress until just a few hours before the Chag begins!

It just seems to me to be a poor lesson for our children to be learning. I'm all for kids getting exercise and participating in team sports, but is it absolutely necessary to have them doing so in such an awkward and inopportune time slot? I'm sure not. The whole point behind the Orthodox little leagues is so that games can be scheduled for Sundays instead of Saturdays as in typical leagues, which would preclude Shomer Shabbat kids from participating. The decision to run the games this Sunday hardly seems to be in line with the concept of making the games in any way convenient for Orthodox participants.

Which reminds me of a similar situation we found ourselves in this winter. One of the orthokids plays in a popular hockey league in a local Orthodox high school. Games are generally played on weeknights. Somehow, it was decided when the calendar was planned that the Thursday night of Thanksgiving was off-limits for scheduling games, yet there were games scheduled for every night of Chanukah - and even running into the time to light candles, which meant that the whole family had to delay candlelighting until after my child's game. All in all, a poor show of prioritizing for my kids, in my opinion.

But hey, that's just me.

    1. Apparently the Rav had a famous saying that the problem with American Jewry is that they know how to keep Shabbos very well. Their problem is that they don't keep erev Shabbos.

    2. Why did the whole family have to delay candle lighting for your son's game?

  9. Way back in 1961, as a student at Chofetz Chaim but spending part of the summer vacation at Far Rockaway where my uncle's family home was next door to the Isaacs' family, someone had the bright idea of playing a game of stickball on Shiva Asar B'Tammuz. Fasting and physical exercise, I can tell you, do not go together and while I didn't faint, I could have told your schule directors that sometimes, sports isn't a recreational activity.

    Welcome back.

    And your point is?

I did mind this Sunday's fiasco. I minded even more when several kids on my son's team showed up while their coach didn't bother to. He had family commitments you see. What, we have no commitments of our own! We were responsible enough to show up and watch the disappointment on our kid's faces when they had to forfeit the game. Shame on the coach. It would have been good to get the kids out of the house while preparations for the holidays were done.

Hilarious. As the old saying goes: "only in the five towns"
It is your community. If you have a problem you should fix it. Obviously its is being done and to such a large regard it must be that alot of people are in on it together. Shows whats important to the people running the show in the five towns.

    NEWS FLASH!!!!
Perhap's after now close to two years after the murder of GG, a family owned business that help establish this community perhaps we should now turn toward Rubashskin and the business practices and the FACT the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT has an ongoing investigation of the alleged activites of controlling pricing and crimmal behavior within our wonderful "frum only" membership. I personally can't wait to see the New York Times expose not only the tricky, cheating and stealing that one of your empowered "frum only" members as committed. I pray to live to see the day that the records of Rubashskin are exposed and see how many wonderful Rabbi's are on the payroll in "no show" jobs including Mr. Wonderful himself " Rabbi Yosef Eisen" In life one sometimes must have patience to see that justice is served,I personally especially since Rabbi Eisen started his demon like attacks against GG with the the spear that Rubashskin, though having 3 Supervisions sent in non-chometz, but NOT PASSOVER products into GG during Pesach ofwhich were recieved by the VAAD's own Mashiglach and the owner's were blamed for until a RECORDING, one of many that proved EISEN wrong.I find it extremely suspect after his efforts failed and he looked like a fool after Mark Bolender exposed the truth that he had to find anything, even a chicken, a kosher chicken,a mystery chicken, a chicken which never surfaced,a alleged customer who purchased this never appeared to face questions or produced a reciept?,for what? to re establish his character. May Hashem help us to forgive, but not forget the evil one's, even if they hide behind a black hat.Frum and crook doesn't equal Non-Frum and honest.THIS WAS JUST ONE BIG COVER UP AND SOMEONE GOT PAID MONEY TO PUT GOURMET GLATT OUT- I leave the rest to your thinking of who that may be and who paid for this to happen?, but one thing for sure he,they, must have been "Frum" because this puts them at level above approach. Shame on Orthomom if this is deleted, afterall you do believe in freedom of press.Perhaps this author will be quoted in the New York Times in the future. When Rubashskins go to jail and our acts of kindest wanting to send kosher food, please make sure it is under the Vaad of the Five Towns.

    (1)

    Gone are the days when my heart was young and gay;

    Gone are my friends from the cotton fields away;

Gone from the earth to a better land I know,

I hear their gentle voices calling, "Old Black Joe!"

    (Refrain:) I'm coming, I'm coming, for my head is bending low;

I hear their gentle voices calling,

    "Old Black Joe!"

    (2)

Why do I weep when my heart should feel no pain?

Why do I sigh that my friends come not again?

Grieving for forms now departed long ago,

I hear their gentle voices calling,

    "Old Black Joe!"

    (3)

Where are thee hearts once so happy and so free?

The children so dear that I held upon my knee?

Gone to the shore where my soul has longed to go,

I hear their gentle voices calling,

    "Old Black Joe!"

Serious question--curiousity only, no "real" opinion: Do orthodox children growing up in the Five Towns have a real chance to abandon the ortho lifestyle? In other words, DO THEY HAVE A CHOICE IN LIFE? Is it much different than the FLDS throughout Utah, AZ, TX, and CO? Obviously, I realize the FLDS is a more extreme bubble. but they are still both bubbles? True?

I have lived in Manhattan/Lawrence my whole life, and I find it progressively more offensive how non-Jews are treated in the Five Towns...Talk about bigotry?

As far as walking in the streets, of course I have no problem with it...However, from a safety standpoint, it is EXTREMELY dangerous on Friday/Saturday nights. I realize that many Orthos are attempting to make a point, while many others also are not--they are simply minding their own business. However, back Lawrence gets extremely dark and the roads have many bends. I am not sure the Orthos walking 5 abreast realize how difficult it actually is to see them...Just a thought.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Anonymous10:06 PM

On a side note....It is simply astonishing to see the transformation of architecture throughout Lawrence over the past couple decades.

While many people have been run out of this town that used to be great, their old, classic, non-intrusive, understated estates have been transformed into hideous, intrusive, overstated, over-sized, non-classy, unmeasurably ugly "mansions". Talk about a lack of architectural taste? Some of the new houses on Ocean Ave. are mind-boggingly awful!!!! What are these people thinking?? Here's an idea: Let's build the biggest, ugliest "thing" that we can on a 3/4 acre lot...It will continue to run down the appeal of Lawrence....

    ReplyDelete
  31. Anonymous10:22 PM

    Here is an idea:

Live life as well as you can--according to human morals set by generations before us. After life, everything will sort itself out. I hate to tell you, but you CANNOT know better than me what the greater power is...or if there even is a greater power. It simply is not worth wasting your life on something that you cannot be certain of until after death. Simple--Just live a moral life. Treat yourself well. Treat your family well. Treat others well--even non-Orthos.

What else can you do? Don't brainwash your children. Let them choose their path, whatever it may be...

Unfortunately, history has taught us that religion creates divisiveness...It creates hatred...It creates bigotry...It creates war...

Is this such a tough concept to grasp?

I feel no anti-semitism. I feel no ill-will towards any group. I simply find it dangerous that children are raised in such bubbles where hatred is taught (towards non-Orthos).

    ReplyDelete
  32. Anonymous11:06 PM

Anonymous 10:59 is clearly not a good person. Simple.

However, don't be hypocritical. You cannot call yourselves liberal. Orthos in the 5 Towns are the most conservative, closed-minded people I have come across (just like Anon 10:59).

You cannot call yourself progressive or liberal when you raise your families in such a bubble. You do not facilitate freedom of thought. That is the definition of anti-openness, anti-liberalism, and anti-choice.

Please think about--even though I know nobody will.---And please practice safety while walking in the streets. It genuinely is dangerous. And please stop building awful houses. And please stop running shops out of business. And please stop teaching hatred. AND PLEASE START WASHING YOUR CLOTHES with more regularity. And please treat people in shops with courtesy--it is embarrassing to watch people order--or demand-- bagels at the Bagelry. Starting an order with, "Yea give me..." is not acceptable--I'm sorry. You are not owed anything in this life. Hate to tell you. You have to treat others with courtesy.

And please THINK. Don't be so quick to assume all non-Orthos are wrong, or are going to hell--whatever it is you think. If you preach liberalism, then study its core priciples--I assure you that Orthos (at least in the Five Towns) do not practice liberalism. Thought is an amazing tool. Allow your children that ability. Children of the FLDS and the Taliban are restricted FREE THOUGHT. Think about it....

    ReplyDelete
  33. Anonymous12:00 AM

The world is negatively affected by extremists (Nazis, Taliban, FLDS, Evangelists, white supremacists, any fundamental religious following, etc). To have the ability to see the world in grey is a tremendous attribute. It fosters thought, respect, and understanding.

Quote from Anonymous 5:41: "Hooray for OM! Let the liberal mind soar!"

Are you kidding? Aside from allowing free speach through this website, how can you possibly claim to be liberal? How about freedom of thought within your household? Your lifestyles contradict the very principles of liberalism. Just because you are a minority does not give you the right to claim liberalism. You have to be open-minded first--See the world in grey. Unfortunately, I believe (stress the word believe) too many Orthos struggle to see shades of grey.
