Talking Bible Dolls

These are...cute, I guess. According to the website, these Talking Bible Dolls, (obviously marketed to Christian audiences - Jesus is one of the three "characters" offered, along with Moses and Queen Esther), are rag dolls that emit "actual scripture verses to introduce children of all ages to the wisdom of the Bible". Click here to listen to clips of the Talking Queen Esther Doll and the Talking Moses Doll quote verse. Nothing like hearing a toy that is being marketed to children say: "Do not commit adultery" when you hug it. (I'm not kidding, Talking Moses actually says that!)

Esther: "God had a plan for my life - just like he does for yours!"

Priceless.

Did these guys even go to yeshiva? Everyone knows that Moshe only read the last eight commandments.

Wow. If they'd had these when I was a kid, I'm sure I'd be on a different path by now.

Weird. The pesukim don't quite match up with the quotes. Scandal!!

Esther 8:16-17

JPS translation:

16 The Jews had light and gladness, and joy and honour. 17 And in every province, and in every city, whithersoever the king's commandment and his decree came, the Jews had gladness and joy, a feast and a good day. And many from among the peoples of the land became Jews; for the fear of the Jews was fallen upon them.

"Talking Esther" version:

There wsas great celebration and joy because I relied on God and used wisdom to help others.

Esther 8:3-6

JPS Translation:

3 And Esther spoke yet again before the king, and fell down at his feet, and besought him with tears to put away the mischief of Haman the Agagite, and his device that he had devised against the Jews. 4 Then the king held out to Esther the golden sceptre. So Esther arose, and stood before the king. 5 And she said: 'If it please the king, and if I have found favour in his sight, and the thing seem right before the king, and I be pleasing in his eyes, let it be written to reverse the letters devised by Haman the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, which he wrote to destroy the Jews that are in all the king's provinces; 6 for how can I endure to see the evil that shall come unto my people? or how can I endure to see the destruction of my kindred?'

"Talking Esther" version:

"I pleaded with the king to save my friends and family."
Huh?

But I bet the gedoilim dolls won't say "My natural beauty won the king's heart."

Hey, you think these are cute - my friend bought my daughter a "Jesus loves me" doll which not only says that on the front but sings it when you press her stomach. Kinda freaky, really. [My friend thought it would be funny.]

Ezzie - Jesus does love you.

And all of us, as well.

I also wonder whether they were relying on the septuagint version, which is quite different than the masoretic text. most Xtian bibles use the LXX version, not ours.

At least the Esther one is talking about herself. The Moses one doesn't say "God commanded:" or anything like that, he just spouts the ten commandments, so you get a doll saying "I am the Lord your God. You may worship no other god but me."

That was the scariest part, to my mind.
