Awful

Police identified the man who was chased down in a subway and shot to death by plainclothes officers as a Brazilian and said Saturday they no longer believed he was tied to the recent terror bombings.

Friday's shooting before horrified commuters prompted criticism of police for overreacting and expressions of fear that Asians and Muslims would be targeted by a "trigger-happy culture" after two well-coordinated attacks in two weeks.

Yeah, well. No worries. The guy, who was unarmed, and had five rounds pumped into him at close range, while being held down by police officers? Not Muslim. Or Asian. So he's dead, but not as a result of racial profiling. Woo hoo.

Update: Now I understand how this could have happened:
Massoud Shadjareh of the Islamic Human Rights Commission said: "It doesn't matter if he was a Muslim or not. He was a human being who did not deserve to be assassinated."

He said the killing was the result of British police officers being sent to Israel to receive training on how to prevent suicide bombings.

"This is a recipe for disaster. What sort of police are we going to end up with?" he said.

A tragedy, but a greater one will happen if the police back down or become too careful because of this.

This really was a horrible mistake, but I don't know if there really is any good alternative to dealing with men who you are already suspicious of, don't head your calls to stop, and are wearing heavy coats on warm days...

Any suggestions?

I wish I did have a suggestion. I'm just sick for this guy's family.

If this has happened in ISRAEL, then you can be sure that Tony Blair and Jack Straw would have many choice words on Israel's inhumanity.

I am very glad that the Brazilian government is going to hold Jack Straw's feet to the fire about this.

Myabe now they will have a little more understanding about what goes in Israel, although I really doubt it.

So is the mayor going to conduct an internal investigation to assess responsibility? No, it seems he already figured this one out:

Mayor Ken Livingstone said the killing was a "human tragedy" that was a consequence of the attacks.

"The police acted to do what they believed necessary to protect the lives of the public," he said. "This tragedy has added another victim to the toll of deaths for which the terrorists bear responsibility."

I thought the Mayor blamed Israel, not the terrorists, for the bombing. So I guess this guy's killing is Israel's fault, according to Livingstone's logic.

Zoe, two pieces of advice:
1. Get yourself on jrants.
2. Post substantive comments on other sites.
Oh yeah, and make sure your blog is well-written and has something to say (I haven't read your blog so don't take this in any way as a commentary on your blog).
Good luck.

What I CAN tell you, and please don't take this the wrong way, is that most bloggers despise this kind of advertising in their comment threads. If you leave a thoughtful comment, people would be much more inclined to visit yout site.

This murder is a result of police in Britain not being alowed to carry guns all these years.Gun control is the darling of the liberals and the very anthisis of Judaism. As jews we believe in arming the police. You can't give guns to police all of a sudden and expect them to be experience in handling firearms.Yes we Jews oppose gun control.

Hmmm, I work in a newsroom in DC and I can't recall any of the witnesses saying they were "horrified." This guy ignored police orders, he leaped over a turnstyle and ran toward a car crowded with passengers, and even when the police brought him down, he fought. If you were lying atop a suspected SUICIDE BOMBER would you stop to ask him questions, or would you pop him in the head before he had the chance to set off his explosives? Too many Americans have died in Iraq because they were hesitant to pull the trigger. The London police followed the rules of engagement to the letter. They are not to blame.

Thr Ranger should check today's New York Times for a description of the "horrified" onlookers.

heshy, i love how you ignore the facts to twist the story to fit your conclusions....

The guy wasn't being chased by a regular cop who doesn't usually carry firearms...he was being chased by undercover police, who are specially trained...This wasn't do to a lack of experiance, the cop did exactly what he should have done.
