Sanitation Garbage

I posted a few times in the past about the alleged corruption that exists in our local sanitation department, and a scathing report has just been released that backs up those claims:
Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice is investigating a Hempstead sanitation district that, according to a new state comptroller's audit, paid health insurance premiums for dead employees and issued no-bid contracts, Rice's spokesman said.

The audit released yesterday found $462,000 in excess costs over a 40-month period ending in April last year. Among the findings: the district was paying for health care premiums for dead former employees and retirees, overpaying for purchases that could have been done more cheaply through state contracts, and double-paying its attorney and accountant by giving them salaries on top of an additional hourly rate.

...Auditor's report

According to the state comptroller's office, Hempstead Sanitary District #1 "operates in an uneconomical and inefficient manner." Auditors found the district:

Provided health, dental and vision insurance for life to commissioners who served as little as a single five-year term. Life insurance policies for top managers and commissioners ranged from $75,000 to $300,000.

Overpaid by more than $46,000 for a diesel fuel contract, when the fuel was cheaper through a state contract.

Paid $16,000 in health care premiums over three years for an employee who had died. Continued to pay health, dental and optical insurance premiums for employees and dependent spouses after they died.

Paid its attorney as an employee with a salary, health insurance and retirement benefits - while also paying the attorney $200 per hour as an independent contractor for much of the legal work he performed.
I had to call the sanitation department earlier this year regarding a garbage pickup. I cannot tell you the obnoxious, dismissive treatment I received from the person who answered the phone. That type of behavior by government employees toward the taxpayers who essentially pay their salaries should never be acceptable - but how much more so, in a district such as this, where we are paying among the highest per/property taxes ($579 in 2006) for the same exact level of service that other communities get for less. We don't have to look far to figure out where all of our extra taxes are going, and it isn't toward customer service.

At the very least, one would think that the extra taxes I'm paying toward some dead guy's health insurance should ensure that I don't have to come home from work to find that the sanitation collectors have strewn my garbage pails in the middle of the street.

Full report can be downloaded here.

het they pick up 3 times a week and come to the back yard to get the garbage. Stop complaining--everybody thinks they are owed something.

That's quite a hilarious comment. So what you're trying to say is that because you get what you deem to be adequate service, the sanitation department is perfectly entitled to be collecting hundreds of thousands of dollars in extra taxes and using those monies to pay themselves perks? I know I wouldn't want you in any sort of public office.

The sanatation dsitrict's are the Mistero family's patronage mill. Isn't the attorney Nick Ddesibio, the former executive leaders son? While there is no disagreement that every tax dollar must be spent properly and with the publiuc trust. The nightmare situation that OM is positing is far from the truth.

OM fails to indicate that the Board has taken many actions requested by the Comptroller (who was the Sainted Alan Hevisi at the time of the audit). That is what audits are for. To find error, and correct it.

11:26 AM

That's absurd. Are you Jesse Mistero or his cousin?

There was an audit initiated over two years ago by the county, before Hevesi was even involved. The audit cited the District's failure to cooperate with just about everything.

Taxpayer abuse does not get more tangible than this. These guys are milking the system for everything they can get and supporting all of their friends and family in the process. This costs all of the taxpayer a lot of money and no one should stand for it.

Here is what I have done for my garbagemen over the years:
1) I replaced my in-ground garbage cans with above ground cans. The garbage men hate the in-ground cans b/c they have to bend over to get the garbage out, straining their backs. Hello? You are a garbageman. This is what you are paid to do!
2) Rushed out at 6:30 am to make sure they get their Xmas tips. (One year they refused to even wait, and just drove away). The past few years I have not even tipped them b/c I found that the level of service was equally crappy whether or not I tipped.
3)Given them bottled water on really hot days.

Here's what they have given me:
1) My garbage is constantly strewn all over the street and driveway.
2)The empty pails are left right behind my car in the driveway (not even standing up- always knocked over). They throw the covers around so they all crack and then my garbage gets eaten by squirrels who eat through the bags making a huge mess, which of course the men won't take away b/c it's not bagged.
3)They take away the top half of my garbage and leave the bottom half in an uncovered pail to get wet and marinate into a disgusting, smelly mushy mess. (See squirrel issue above).
4) This week, they left broken glass right at the foot of my driveway.

People who don't like to swim don't become lifeguards, people who can't stand the sight raw meat don't become butchers. If you don't want to collect garbage, why become a garbageman? I guess it must be the short workday, the great benefits and the low expectations of the powers that be in Sanitary District #1.

My friend's gharbage area is below her bedroom window and she used to hear the guy cursing and yelling at 6:30am about how she has too much garbage.

I'm not intimately familiar with Long Island garbage practices, but I do have a question based on Woodmere Dump's post: don't you have the kind of garbage bins that have a metal rod that is grabbed by a device on the garbage truck and automatically lifted and dumped?

They switched to this type of bin over a decade ago in Chicago, and it allowed them to reduce the number of garbagemen on each truck. Of course, we also have the benefit that *everyone* has an alley, so it's easier to move the truck quickly through the route, which I know is problematic is some places.

Unfortunately, this system of Sanitation districts is created by state law, and powerful state politicians like Skelos certainly have no interest in shutting down these rackets run by their cronies.

If anyone on the state level really cared, they wouldn't get away with any of this. Which other election is held for a few hours at night in the middle of a garbage depot? How does anyone let them get away with a polling place that senior citizens have no means of getting to?

'this system of Sanitation districts is created by state law'

If you replaced the hundreds of school districts, sanitation districts, town and village councils, etc., etc. with county government, your property taxes would plummet. Maryland has always had this system and things work pretty well. In the entirety of the two counties that surround Baltimore City, there is exactly one incorporated municipality -- Annapolis. All other services, including schools, are part of the county government.

Rumor has it that part of the reason for the long line was that the PTA from School District 15 teamed up with the Inwood Republican machine and used it phone lists to defeat the "private candidate" and vote for the status quo. The bloggers here are out of their minds. Did it ever occur to you that a lot of the old time families of this community happen to be related and it is the old time families of this community
that are community-minded ?

I am an old-timer of this community who is not related to any of these families. For the 40+ years I've lived in the five towns, for the most part everyone lived in harmony. A diverse community where everyone had a role in some way. Not now...oh no. We can't have anyone outside of the "frum" community making a living, making decisions or getting an education.

The constant accusations and constant whining about not getting your taxes worth of this and that and the other thing are obnoxious, vile and divisive. It's embarassing. Why aren't you worried about Fed contracts ? For heavens sake, you're talking about pocket change here.

As for your garbage woes - do you think the Town Of Hempstead garbage service is better ? They MIGHT EVER go on to my property to take cans. If the garbage cans are not at the curb they leave it. When they do take it, they often leave the cans, sans tops, in the middle of the street.

What a bunch of whiners.

Do a little homework and get your facts straight. The audit report on each of the Sanitary Districts is not an abstract assessment of services provided. It is a comprehensive comparison of the services provided, the cost to taxpayers and the expenditures of the district, as compared to each of the other sanitary districts.

The abuses of our tax dollars are unparalleled in any of the other districts and it appears that they have gotten worse over the years, as the district leadership continued unchecked.

The abuses in Cedarhurst are clearly not as stark, but it certainly isn't good government when every village official is either a family or friend of the local republican machine, or hand-picked and brought up through the ranks to serve the machine. It's apparent that the conflicts of interest and lack of transparency are only the tip of the iceberg.

All things considered, the bad government, abuses of power and apparent corruption that we see in some of our local governments are the fault of individuals who don't take an interests in their government (and how their tax dollars are spend), don't inform themselves of the issues and don't bother to vote. (Are you one of these people?) The foundation of democracy is the checks and balances that the Constitution establishes on all levels of government. We are given the right to question and to vote, in order to make this system of checks and balances, and democracy, work.

Consolidation of power, lack of tranparency and freewheeling with our tax dollars certainly works out well for the select group of family members, old timers and other club members who are in control, but it does not serve the interests of the residents/taxpayers/voters and belies the purpose of democracy.

For heavens sake, you're talking about pocket change here.

I pay $700/yr to the sanitary district. If I lived in another district, I'd be paying around $400 (with backyard pickup). $350 is not pocket change for me, and $350 x 25,000 (households) is certainly not pocket change for the district residents.

It seems to me that most people are scared to run for the Bd because of fear that their garbage pickup will be affected. Why are the elections not publicized better? When is the next election? Why don't the newspapers carry banner headlines calling for a free spirited democratic election to shake up a complacent Board. We many not expect much from the Nassau herald, but how about Gordon's and Fertig's papers, these are the only free voices left in the Towns.

Why are you worried about the Sanitary District when "Democratic" elections in Cedarhurst are a laughing stock. Mayor Parise hires his cousin and has literally never been challenged as Mayor. What do I tell my children about the Democratic process? Read about it but do not expect your community to actually practice it?

7:38 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Well, not everyone who works for the village is his cousin. But nepotism and conflicts of interest are definitely not frowned upon in this municipality.

Montilli does the plumbing work and grants the village's plumbing permits as the plumbing inspector.

Novello does the architectural / engineering work and then he gets the plans approved by the zoning board (which he sits on).

Electrical permits are approved the same way.

Brown does the construction work and then approves all the plans as a board member.

It should be interesting to see who will be selected to profiteer from the open seat on the zoning board.

With all of the subdivisions and construction going on in the village, there must be a lot of people on the take.

Parise's nephew is the "Superintendent of Public Works" with 13 people working under him. You've got to wonder what all those people are doing (and how he managed to get that job).

And then there are the Cittadinos. (yes, the village employs father and son)

Then again, there are a few "elected" officials who are not cousins of the mayor. But how many of them weren't selected and appointed by the mayor so that they wouldn't have to run for office?

Wonder when the next village job is opening up? Just find a cousin who's not already employed by the sanitary district or the village, and you'll have your answer.

Moshe seems to speak for the silent majority on this issue. If the people of Cedarhurst cared about the Sanitary District or Village Government they would organize an opposition. Mayor Parise is paid and no other surrounding mayor is paid and yet no one cares. Where are leaders like Jeff Toback on this issue. He is an honest caring representative who always answers calls and tries to help. Yet, as a political leader he has remained silent as has the majority of the population. Bad government is bad government is bad government. If you choose to ignore what goes on around you, the world may not come to and end, but the "elected" officials will gradually grow more "abusive" of taxpayers and their interests. This is exactly what we see now in the sanitary district. With the benefit of the audit, at least we now know where some of our excessive sanitation tax dollars are going. Unfortunately, the village of cedarhurst has avoided the scrutiny of state and county authorities, but the pattern of nepotism, cronyism and pay to play bureaucracy is unmistakable, and good government will inevitably prevail.

It's no secret that the village of lawrence has about half the number of employees that the village of cedarhurst has, despite being over double the size of cedarhurst and it's greater population.

While Rabinowitz may or may not be your name, there are obvious reasons why one would would be reluctant to identify themselves here after sharing the dirt on the village or the sanitation district. (Think: loss of garbage pickup, garbage strewn on one's front lawn, no snow plowing, refusal of permits, etc.)

The only thing that isn't clear is why any objective resident would brazenly defend the actions of the sanitary district board and/or the village government, considering the documented abuses of power and taxpayer funds. What kind of connections are there between that person and the powers within these local political rackets?

Is Mr. Rabinowitz right and the only reason there is no opposition is because everyone agrees with Mayor Parise and what he stands for.

Where are leaders like Jeff Toback on this issue.

I would imagine Toback is not too happy with Parise regardless of the way he runs the village, given the fact that Parise is a staunch Republican and Toback is a staunch Democrat. Toback obviously has no influence or control in Cedarhurst (or even in the Sanitary District) so there isn't much he can do, and it would be political suicide for him to get involved with his hands tied.

Moshe seems to speak for the silent majority on this issue.

The majority may be silent, but not because they support nepotism or corruption in government. The majority is apathetic in general with respect to politics and government - which is precisely the reason that these politicians get challenged so rarely. But someone ultimately takes on the challenge. That's the story of our country.

Though Mr. Toback is a democrat he certainly seems to have distinguished himself in rising above "label" politics in an attempt to do what is right and not only what is politically correct. I would hope and also believe that if any credible MAINSTREAM attempt was made to open up politics and government at the level of the Sanitary District and Village of Cedarhurst HE WOULD BE AS HELPFUL AS HE COULD. Local politics should be more about what is good for the community rather than a strict Democratic/Republican venue. I am not even aware that in Lawrence or Woodsburgh the polical affiliations of the leaders come into play.

I’m pleased to learn that you do not even live in Cedarhurst. That tidbit kicks out the underpinning of any iota of credibility behind your comments on the governance of our village, and further makes my residence here that much more pleasant.

I must, however, congratulate you on your admission that you ”don't know much about the Parise "regime" or the Sanitation issues.” That hasn’t prevented you from disparaging Mr. Parise, certain Cedarhurst public officials and village employees or negatively commenting on the operation of the Sanitary District. won't be collected. A matter of equal concern to someone of your courage and profound thought.
Well, your garbage will continue to be collected at your home, no matter what, and at this site, as long as it remains available to the likes of a coward such as yourself.

As to your claim that all anonymous comments are not made by the same author, it is interesting to note that you fail to actually deny that they are all not yours, or even identify which of those are from your keyboard and which are not. But identification of anything is not your strong suit.

As far as the Village of Cedarhurst or the Sanitary District being run as democracies, is concerned, I recall a recent Sanitary District contested election in which the pathetic challenger was creamed. When it was over, he could be heard maoning the words, "political machine." I don't doubt that he wishes that he had a better one. By the way, did you know that he works for a Muslim country? Some of nmy co-religionists will do anything for a buck. His opponent had the grace to refrain from making it an issue in the contest.

As far as the Village of Cedarhurst elections are concerned, no one is preventing anyone from challenging the incumbents. The absence of any opposition is a tribute to the satisfaction of the voting public here for the way Cedarhurst is run. Or can't you find anyone else who works for Kuwait to throw his or her hat in the ring.

Meanwhile, your refusal to identify yourself and provide attribution to your vitriol and venomous comments, so that the rest of us can see you in the light of day, gives us all the privilege of ignoring them.

I wish to remain anonymous as well, and I will preface my remarks by stating that this is my third comment on this tread, and I am not the author of, nor could I identify the authors of any of the other comments. (I hope that helps clarifies things for Mr. Rabinowitz.) My previous two comments were those posted above at 3:35PM and 11:12AM.

As I stated earlier, I don't live in the village, or profess to know much about these issues, and I think that my perspective is somewhat more objective than many of the others expressed here.

After reading Mr. Rabinowitz's comments here, which seem to repeatedly dance around the issues, I am still left wondering (1) what is Rabinowitz's response to the concerns about Cedarhurst and the Sanitary District that are cited above in this thread, and those that are cited in the audit reports, and (2) why is Mr. Rabinowitz so interested and concerned with defending the powers that be in Cedarhurst and the Sanitary District? It is clear that he comes to the table with far lest objectivity than the average person.

Maybe Orthomom can weigh in on this if everyone but Moshe Rabinowitz is mistaken, but it seems that everyone by Mr. Rabinowitz is of the opinion that the purpose of a blog and a comment thread is for the objective discussion of issues rather than debating the identity of commenters. No one really cares who rabinowitz is or whether there even is anyone by that name commenting here.

Can we get back to the issues now?

I don't see how you would be able to discern all the family relations from the names. But someone posted some of the names in Cedarhurst above. All of the Cedarhurst officials' and employees' names are at www.cedarhurst.gov.

As for the Sanitary District, you'd probably only be able to get a full list of names from the state comptroller's office. Phil Mistero is the superitendent of the district (for over $150k/yr + full benefits). Nat Swergold is the part-time lawyer who receives full-time salary and benefits. Sal Evola is the part time accountant who receives full-time salary and benefits. Joseph Kenn is the Asst. Superintendent (so that Mistero doesn't really have to do any work). Joseph Candella, Jack Rose, Irving Kaminetsky, Harry Beltrani and James Velardi are on the Board of Commissioners (which pays $7,500/yr plus full benefits, and lots of other goodies).

To Mr. Rabinowitz When Jay,Madison and Hamilton used assumed names for the Federalist papers the monarchy was over and there was no fear of the King of England doing anything. I don't know much about Madison or Hamilton, but I do know that there are issues here worth discussing and all this Rabinowitz fellow wants to do is brush them under the carpet. Hey AnonymASS,

A public debate is held in a public forum and the debaters are required to show their faces and give their names. Blogs appear to reservce a special place for the uninformed, like yourself, spewing rumor, vituperation and opinion based on perception and hate-filled emotion rather than fact.

You have shown yourself to be incapable of understanding how anyone can objectively appreciate good government without some greedy, underhanded or nefarious political motivation.

You would be well advised to push yourself away from your computer, get out in the fresh air and clear your befuddled head, but I fear that your virtual hopelessness will only find solace in a long stay in a rubber room and the administration of high doses of thorazine or some other appropriate, and perhaps even stronger medication.

I'd check it if I were you (Thank G-D I'm not), since you may be suffering from cerebral anoxia. If that is so, it would be based on an assumption that there is something ruminating in that cavern between your ears.

Your rush to respond, and at multiple times at that, could be indicative of a health problem, like high blood pressure. You know, hypertension puts you at risk of stroke or heart attack. But that would assume that you have a brain or a heart. In your case, a rebuutable assumption.

Also, you haven't yet explained away the damning results of the sanitation audit. How in the world with that audit, can you be defending the status quo so vehemently?

5:42 PM
Anonymous MOSHE RABINOWITZ said...

To Orthomom or whoever you are - By the way, WHO are YOU? Or is that a big secret too?
I must be getting somewhere, because "Anonymous" keeps replying to my comments. Apparently you think that discussing anything on the merits with someone who hides behind anonymity is a worthy endeavor. I will be pleased to discuss the substance of any issue with this or any other individual who will identify himself or herself. But to engage in substantive discussions with someone who is no one deprives me of the ability to know the qualifications of that person and consequently the substance of what forms his or her opinions. We all have a right to our opinions. We also have a right to challenge the opinions of others. But opinions, like a sieve, can't hold water unless there is something behind them - something like expertise, in depth examination of an issue or some athoritative source that supports it. In other words, for opinions to be taken seriously, they shoud be informed.

As far as the Sanitary District audit is concerned, I am fully aware of its contents, the motivation behind it, why news of it appeared so prominently when it did, why news of it disappeared and why news of it was recently revived. The audit itself and the politician responsible for it desrve no less scrutiny than does the Sanitary District. Let "Anonymous" provide a legitimate identity, and I will be pleased to engage in a substantive discourse on this or any other issue sticking in Anonymous' craw.

Insofar as "Anonymous" being more than one person, I sincerely doubt that the "Anonymous" who has been involved in a discourse with me is anything but a single individual. All that sophomoric clown has to do is identify which comments are his or hers, and which are not.

And may I suggest to you, Orthomom, that you obtain legal counsel with a view towards screening the comments of some of your contributors, such as fivetowneyes. Both you and they may very well find yourselves on the wrong end of a libel suit. The days when you can get away with this stuff are coming to an end.

Unlike you, I have nothing to hide, I have come forward and identified myself legitimately and given my real name, and the only thing I'm vested in here is my home and the taxes I pay. Since you are not a Cedarhurst resident, you probably don't pay real estate taxes to the village but nevertheless enjoy it's many benefits.
Your dirty mind is solely capable of seeing anyone who supports our local government as as someone with a vested interest in it, or a Republican.
You are relegated to spewing your garbage on a blog site. If you attempted to get it into any legitimate media organ, it would never pass the smell test and would wind up in the circular file together with the trash that you claim to fear would be uncollected.
Talk about my comments being "dumb," I guess that you know "dumb" when you see it, especially when you look in your bathroom mirror every morning.
But whatever you do, continue to refrain from letting the facts confuse you.

The disclosure of your identity is prerequisite to any meaningful discussion on the issues. So is the depth of your background, experience and knowledge involving the matters of which you so ignorantly speak - qualities which you are seriously lacking.

You can call me anything you wish. After all, thay are only asserted in blogs. Call me dumb, ignorant, a lacky, ad infinitum. Trouble is -- it doesn't make you any smarter, more rational or less idiotic. Sticks and stones, don't you know.

How do you rationalize the audits in the school districts if the sanatation audit was political?

That's very funny, as usual. These guys and their cronies are corrupt politicians of the highest order. They haven't earned an honest buck for themselves or any of their friends or family members for as long as anyone can remember.

The fact that they've lived here their entire lives or most of their lives doesn't translate to an entitlement to have their hands in everyone's pockets. Taxpayers have no need for the "godfathers" in local government. There's a reason why the mafia has gone out of style and these godfathers aren't that far behind.

Whether you respect the opinion of fellow residents or not, this is still a democracy and residents have a right to their opinion and a right to vote. The demographics are changing and whether or not their old-school mafia style of governing ingratiated them in the eyes of their friends and family who get their handouts and no-show jobs, the growing majority does not belong to their mafia, does not receive their handouts and no-show jobs but foots the bill with their taxes. People around here tend to vote when their pockets are being picked, so this regime's days are numbered.

Rabinowitz, maybe it's time you started cozying up with some honest politicians. You probably won't get the same type of perks and handouts, but there are some honest, less tangible benefits that you can probably get.

With your tenacity (and free time), I'm sure they'd value your allegiance.

"Moshe", thanks for letting all of us who doubted the identity you presented for yourself know for certain! 5:20 PM was too late for any observant Jew to be posting. I guess your fake name is a front for Mistero and the rest of the gang. The details always trip you up, my friend "Moshe".

So what you think you know about me is just another one of the delusions from which you suffer.

Moshe, I don't believe you. First of all, 5:20 was quite late to be "getting ready for shul". You would know that if you were who you say you are. You're a fraud and we all know it. Orthomom, you see the ISO addresses - was Friday afternoon's commenter the as the original "Moshe Rabinowitz"?

Moshe, you take the cake as one of the most offensive and obnoxious commenters in my blog's history - and that says a lot, considering the lows some of my commenters have reached in the past. The only reason I've allowed you to continue is for the simple fact that you make no one but yourself look bad with your crude rantings and ravings. We all know you are vested in this discussion. You show up out of the blue, never having commented here before, and proceed to throw insults (but no coherent counterarguments) at anyone who you feel is impugning the great honor of our sanitation department. The selfsame sanitation department that has been clearly documented to have been on the take for years. Are we to believe that you, claiming to be nothing more than a concerned local Orthodox citizen, feel more strongly about the local sanitation department being impugned than about any other local issue I've posted about?

Don't make me laugh.

This Rabinowitz guy CERTAINLY sounds like a front for a Mistero.

There was nothing political about a public municipality being audited. My tax dollars go for collection as well as for audits. In the private sector, these sanitation folks would have no job with the crap that goes on.

A Mistero daughter is a CPA with Sal Evola's firm. Sal Evola doesn't do his paperwork right and he is tied into the bridge, the fire department, sanitation, Cedarhurst and Island Park. All while carrying a full time job in Cedarhurst. He does not file paperwork on time, he does not do personal taxes on time for his own firm and he is in a lot of hot water.

As far as the Misteros are concerned, believe me, they are all together with the Parises and Cittadinos - all relatives. They all have jobs with the village, with the schools and with the Town of Hempstead. It appears that the Misteros have a stronghold on School District 15 - as far as hiring personnel and backing those who they want to run for school board. Frank Parise resigned from the school board so that he can work at Cedarhurst Village Hall. It was a smoke screen that it was reported "to spend more time with the fire department". Nothing is further than the truth. Blood is thicker than water, those who have benefitted from cronyism moves around in small circles and eventually the whole thing will come down.

Why is the Superintendent of Sanitary District 1 (Phil Mistero) building a multi-million dollar home in Atlantic Beach when his house in Cedarhurst isn't even sold yet? Rumors are going around that he will be retiring soon (Joseph Kenn, Asst. Superintendent) already bailed out - and is leaving the state next month. Another political crony that is involved with Inwood Fire District and Sanititation.

AND, what about this North Lawrence Fire District that is commissioned by Mistero's political cronies and they don't have a fire house! But they collect taxes and play with them - before handing them over to Lawrence-Cedarhurst Fire Department for their contract for coverage.

Make no mistake - this is deeper than anyone realizes. Oh yes, Jimmy Vilardi, Sanitary District 1 Commissioner is a relative of the Misteros. Jack Rose has been a strong supporter and ally to all the illegal activities and cronyism going on.

Moshe Rabinowitz is not a real name. You guys are right about the posting so close to shabbos. Only a dumb goy would have tried to pull that off.

How is Phil Mistero affiliated with the Village of Cedarhurst?

I just saw Phil Mistero's name printed on a petition nominating Parise and his boys for the next village election. It seems that Phil was selected by Parise for a special committee to fill any vacancies in the upcoming Village election.

I guess Parise considers it an honor to have the Chief of Sanitation Corruption serving in the village too.

10:55 AM
Blogger FiveTownEyes said...

Phil Mistero is a Cedarhurst resident (Westminister Road)and Andy Parise is his cousin (Andy's mother and Phil's mother were sisters). Tommy Cittadino is also a cousin. Frank Parise is a second cousin. A little more distant are the Lanzilotta's and the Montilli's.

Andy Parise used to run a very popular Republican Club encompassing most of the Five Towns and Atlantic Beach years ago, but it has dwindled down so much, that Jesse Mistero (Phil's brother) must get his club working on overtime to help out Andy's club (Andy is still an Executive Leader).

It's all politics. This is what holds our towns, villages and school districts back.

By the way, Kaminetsky on the sanitation board (commissioner) stays there because he was a good friend of Pete DeSibio's (Jesse and Phil's uncle) and needs the benefits and retirement - so he is very hands-off, respectfully. Jimmy Vilardi is a relative (third or fourth cousin) and Jack Rose (retiring soon) is as brown nosed as it gets - he handled the district's insurance for years, and making blunders left and right.

Just for your information, Cedarhurst Park was off limits for years - no improvements at all. It isn't until the Orthodox community came in and asked for changes - was anything done. People with millions of dollars offered to pay for all renovations, but Parise (and Farina) did not want the park touched for years - just left as opened space.

Change is good.

As far as Moshe Rabinowitz - he made comments that were echoed in the newspapers by someone from Sanitary District # 1. He also has enough jewish background (but not orthodox) to throw a few words around - read the comments in the paper carefully and compare it to the comments on this site. from the district. If you read about comments in the Herald and other papers and read the comments he made about the "witch hunt" that the comptroller's office was on ("Hevesi being a thief"), these are exactly the same words used both in the paper and in this blog.

As for Evola, he'll have his day. "Moshe" should watch his own back.

During sanitary elections last July, I polled many Orthodox people. Surprisingly, many of them backed Joe Candella for re-election. That made no sense to me, except there are those who like their service and don't want to rock the boat. There are ways of making the system more efficient without changing the service. Believe me. There is a LOT of FLUFF on the top.

This who topic turned into a threatening tone. Everyone should watch out for legal papers.

Blogs are very much different than a website written by one person. Orthomom has little to do with the opinions of others. And they are just opinions.

I think dear Moshe WORKS in Cedarhurst but LIVES on the North Shore. Threatening people with lawsuits is just plain stupid. If one is clearly innocent, all the accusations in the world won't stick.

Moshe FINALLY learned how to use a computer and now looks to blogs to threaten people with lawsuits. over to kill you"), our blogs are safe. But I have a suspicion that there is a lawyer or two on this site looking for names and identities so that he can make more money through the municipality(ies) he may represent. Taking MOSHE'S example of Bill Clinton, he did NOT have sexual relations with THAT woman. He had an inappropriate affair, but not intercourse. So much for MOSHE'S example.

MOSHE is definitely going to great lengths to defend the village of Cedarhurst and the Sanitary District, don't you think? ABNORMALLY great lengths - and to have people divulge their identities so that he can make more money suing people - just like a lawyer. AND, he's looking for specifics on certain people.

Well, maybe there's a lot of HEAT on Moshe too. Hmmm..... But that is just MY opinion - not fact.

Moshe Rabinowitz -- who, in all likelihood, is not really Moshe Rabinowitz -- holds himself out as a pious man, a religious Jew.

Clearly, he is as phony as a three dollar bill -- or, should I say, as Phil Mistero, Nat Swergold and Sal Evola are honest.

A religious Jew would never cast aspersion upon others, resorting to slurs and name-calling. In fact, to cast such stones is a sin.

Then again, I am sure Rabinowitz (or is it Swergold?) never so much as read the Ten Commandments, let alone adheres to them!

You have to love this guy, though, for, religious observer or not, he is an anherent to ritual, following the leaders of the Sanitary District, and the dogma of the GOP, where they will eventually take all of us -- TO THE POOR HOUSE.

No one in his or her right mind could stand up for the corruption and dishonesty of the Sanitation Districts. And its a damn shame that we, as taxpayers and decent, law-abiding citizens, refuse to stand up to these special districts, as well as to Town Hall.

It is quite obvious that anonymASS, fivetowncockeyes and orthomomser are all the same person, combined into a single pile of filth who should crawl back into the hole from whence it emerged. Religious Jews never cast aspersions on other Jews? I guess you never heard of the Satmar and those Orthodox yentas who daily indulge in Loshan Hora while gabbing in the aisles at GG. I have no problem being true to my faith and casting aspersions at anyone, including alleged coreligionists, who hide behind aliases so thay can lie, abuse decent people and destroy reputations. You cannot accept the fact that I am who I say I am, because you refuse to say who you are. You cannot accept the fact that an Orthodox Jew supports the establishment, because your misguided thinking has you believing that we all walk in lockstep with the likes of you - or at least should.

Now that the political pimp Wetizman is on Spitzer's short list for State Comptroller, it has become more apparent that it was no coincidence that the audit report was simultaneously resurrected with his self promoting campaign, kissing Spitzer's ring up in Albany? The timing of this revelation and his attempt to run for higher office expose Weitzman's political motivation in concocting the findings in the report. If there was any truth in it, how come D.A. Rice has terminated her investigation without taking further action. You won't read about it in that left wing rag, Newsday.

As for the community alliance website, the identities of the wannabees and malcontents behind it are well known, expecially the one hiding in the shadows, whose afraid that the big shot lobbying law firm he works for will find out about his activities - activities which go against the interests of their Fortune 500 clients. In response to 7:48 PM, I think there are some wonderful people in the Village of Cedarhurst who are not only helpful, but kind and actually do their jobs. I have no problems with my sanitary district garbage men (the truck crew)as they have been just as kind and helpful. I'm sure there are a few bad apples in every barrel, so I don't like to condemn both municipalities as far as the services we have received from the actual workers. Yes, there are a few that don't belong to the patronage mill or are related to the Misteros. There are also those who have no choice but to join the patronage mill to get or keep their jobs. By the way, I don't feel every Republican belongs to the patronage mill - I for one don't. I even went to a recent brunch held last Saturday morning so that I could meet some of the candidates running and to formulate my own opinions.

It was never about the service workers in my mind.

Can we get the same service for $450.00 per year in taxes versus $850.00 per year? I certainly think so. I for one even built an enclosure at the beginning of my property so that the truck doesn't have to back down my long driveway. Yes, we bring our garbage out to the enclosure - sometimes in our sleeping gear, clearly to make our workers feel appreciated, even though we pay for backyard service. It has always been "please" and "good morning" from the workers. I meet up with them frequently during my jogs around the neighborhood and golf courses.

As for Cedarhurst, I support their seniors and parks programs monetarily. For many years we owned a business and a home in Cedarhurst until we inherited a home in Lawrence.

We're a hard working family, just like everyone else, and pay our share of taxes (more than most people's salaries), but we are grateful for many things in life. But being ripped off and seeing gross mismanagement in this town is absolutely unacceptable. And when a swarm of unacceptable standards in two different municipalities comes down to a dozen or so of the same players, it is not I that is shedding a spotlight on them, but they themselves are doing it. When repeated audits come down to the same players continuing to make the same mistakes over and over (read back to the audits on the state comptroller's site done several years ago), there's a problem.

With both village, school and (probably) sanitary elections coming up, they are getting an early start - with a black eye.

Speaking of elections, they had a meeting of "public school advocates" last nite in Inwood. Rumor has it that someone who holds a job with Sanitation, who has children in the school, and whose wife may have held a job with the school district will be running for school board. We may not like the way the money is spent in the Sanitary District, but I guess they might not like the way the new Board is trying to be efficient.

As far as your yiddish is concerned, my grandmother spoke it. A person in Orthodox circles wouldn't lean only on yiddish "old country" phrases. Another clue that you are b.s.

where we are paying among the highest per/property taxes ($579 in 2006)

Awwww poor widdle middle-class suboibinite has to pay high taxes. I'll tell you about high taxes. I pay almost $2,000 a year in property taxes on a modest little semi-detached in Baltimore City that wouldn't fetch more than $250K if I tried to sell it today. It could be worse, as Maryland has a system to keep property taxes from rising too suddenly because of increases in property values -- my assessed value for tax purposes is < $100K, so i would shudder to think what the taxes would be were I assessed a full market value.

All that said, the folks at Baltimore City Department of Public Works are polite and professional when I call, and I generally have no problem with the trash collectors.

Maybe you need to move down here to Dixie. Lot's of orthodox here, too, though most of 'em are a little ary of all the New Yorkers moving down and driving up property values, thus messing up housing affordability within the eruv.

Of all of the irrelevant comments that I've seen around here, yours certainly takes the cake. Do you have any clue what people around here pay in property taxes?

My sanitation taxes alone are almost the entire property tax our friend is paying in Baltimore. If I lived that close to Washington DC, I would do very well financially.

So the comment on taxes in Baltimore really is irrelevant.

Hey all you malcontents,

I prefer old time Yiddish. It was the language of the Jews who came to the U.S. during the great migration from the shtetls of Eastern Europe and who established a Yiddish culture and way of life here, which unfortunately no longer exists. In those days, Hebrew was a "dead" language. Today it is Yiddish. I try to keep it alive. Without those caring and determined refugees from the anti-semitism of late ninteenth and early twentieth century Europe, today's Jewish communities in this country would not exist. The displaced survivors of Hitler's death camps would still be displaced. They sent them care packages, sponsored them at personal financial risk so they could come to America and live the good life. They took them into their homes. How many of you remember the HIAS? How many of you would do any of this, today? Those events are drawn from my own memory and actual experience. They saved many of those poor wretches who through their efforts were able to come here, prosper and produce progeny, like yourselves, so you could experience the good life. Some of those descendants are probably some of you. Instead of complaining about all that is made to work in our community, you should appreciate what you've got. Because I don't go along with your carping ingratitude, you question my authenticity and send out counterfeit messages after Shabbos begins, attributing them to me to demean my sincerity. You deserve no rsepect and nothing more than the tenor of my messages because you engage in half truths, assertions unsubstantiated by facts, fraud and hide behind aliases to conceal your identities.

I know as much or not more Ivrit as any of you, and do not need anyone to tell me how and in what language to express my comments. I have a second home in Israel and spend two months out of every year there, give ten per cent of my income to Jewish charities. "Tzduckah," or do any of you would-be intelligentsia have a better word for it? I will proudly match my Yiddishkeit to that claimed by any of you malcontents and hypocrites.

The would-be legal mind who informs us that truth is a defense to claims of defamation, is correct. But half truths, rumors and outright lies are not. When you call someone a crook, you had better be able to prove it. When all was said and done, the politically motivated Weitzman audit couldn't prove any criminality. Neither can any of you. D.A. Rice's refusal to take this any further action is proof of this. If I was a lawyer, I'd advise you all to start tranferring your assets.

Uhu, and my other car is a lamborghini.

Nathaniel, with a little bit of effort and a dictionary, you could probably learn a few hebrew words to add to your collection. Granted, you'll still need to worry about using them out of context, but that's what makes your posts all the more entertaining.

And you may want to elaborate a little more on some other orthodox practices like mikvah and mezuzah - your "Tzduckah" sounds like it was lifted from a third-rate actor with a glue-on beard and sidecurls.

Again, we have lost focus of the subject.

As far as "Moshe" is concerned, be continues to defend the goings on of the Sanitary District - and has intimate knowledge of it.

Why were there so many "no bid" contracts? When new fences and landscaping was done on and around district property, including the flagpoles and flags, why didn't they go up for bid? I read the Herald every week and have never seen those things go up for bid - including the two Ford Explorers that are leased. I remember before Phil took the helm, a short guy used to drive around in a gray, older vehicle. Was that not enough? Why was another position at $100K+ position created after Phil took helm - but it was okay when he was commissioner?

These are tax dollars - MY tax dollars we are talking about. These are the taxes of the struggling families in the area who are not only trying to educate their children in our communities, whether it be public or private. We spend our money shopping in the area, supporting the local economy. So the strong claims both Weitzman and Hevesi's offices wrote about (they don't do the audits personally, so I am sure all those professional accountants are all lying), where is the tightening of the belts? Wages being paid 20% above collective bargaining agreement, people who show up twice a month for meetings receive retirement and health benefits? Workers who work 15 hours a week and get paid for 40?

This sounds like a political patronage mill if I ever heard of.

Moshe, give us answers rather than the general "politically motivated" banter you have been spewing.

Let's face it. We all know the sanitary district is as corrupt as they come. This is old-school corruption, which the Mistero machine has come to rely on to support all of their family and friends. Rather than cleaning up their act in response to the audit, they seem to be staying the course. I guess they consider it a vindication that there haven't been any criminal charges as of yet (Moshe's probably taking credit for that). It's self evident that the taxpayers are getting fleeced by these guys every day that they control the district, and that's not going to change until they're all imprisoned or voted out.

But it would be interesting to know how much of the same corruption exists in the Village of Cedarhurst.

Parise's books don't get much scrutiny from anyone, because he manages keep the budget somewhat level, with all the extra taxes coming in from local businesses. Obviously, this is not so much a function of good budgeting as it results from what is one of the proportionally highest business tax bases that exists in the area (as compared to the village's residential property tax base). So the fiscal abuses are not as identifiable as they are in Sanitary District 1. But the village shares its accountant/treasurer with Sanitary District 1, and he's undoubtedly using the same funny math in the village as he is in the district.

The cronyism in the village is alive and well and is comparable to that of the Sanitary District. The mayor has managed to bring in every one of his friends and family (who aren't already employed by the sanitary district) and provides them with salaries, benefits and in some cases, a steady stream of business from locals who need permits.

There is a well-known quote, "sunlight is the best disinfectant". Enough said.

Another well known quote" The best defense is a good offense. Hear to tell, some from the Sanitary District may be running for the School Board.
