VOTE

Tomorrow marks school board elections in my community, which will be the culmination of weeks of sniping back and forth between the two "sides" represented in this battle.

Sadly, one side has taken normal election-season back and forth to a completely different level.

I posted below about the anti-Orthodox ads published in local papers. Said newspaper was, to their credit, quick to publish an apology and explanation for their decision to accept the ads for publication. Our local elected officials rushed to condemn the hateful, dishonest and divisive tone of the ads in no uncertain terms. Yet have we heard anything in apology or condemnation from the candidates who put out the ads? Does anyone else hear crickets (ok, crickets - and Pamela Greenbaum trying to make the idiotic case that it's those who are most offended by the ads who are somehow the ones playing the religion card - as opposed to the bigots who put the ads out in the first place)?

I had not originally planned to endorse specific candidates in advance of tomorrow's election, but the manner in which some of the candidates have behaved in recent weeks leaves me no choice.

I do not believe that candidates who endorse bigotry and dishonesty in their election materials deserve to be making decisions about our children's education.

I do not believe that electing candidates to office who make every attempt throughout an election to further drive a wedge between the already warring factions in this community is the answer to bringing this community together.

I do not believe a candidate who sues over criticism of her policies instead of defending those policies deserves to be in public office.

I do not think a candidate who angrily screams and yells at others and cannot control his emotions and outbursts at public meetings is an appropriate candidate to be elected as a public official.

I do not think a first-time candidate who is unable to answer simple questions on candidate's night about how, if elected, she plans to run this troubled, underperforming district, is qualified to be a candidate.

I do not think that candidates who are so tied up to a teacher's union that their campaign literature is sent out under the teacher's union cover are considering the needs of the district children first and foremost.

I do not think that candidates who, simply to be contrary, endorse voting "NO" to the budget that has a chance of getting this district out of the dreaded cycle of austerity deserve to be in charge of our children's education.

I will not vote for bigotry and divisiveness tomorrow. I will not vote for fiscal irresponsibility tomorrow. I will not vote for obnoxious campaign rhetoric tomorrow. I will not vote for dishonesty tomorrow.

I will vote for candidates who have pledged throughout their campaign to work for the benefit of ALL district children. I will vote for candidates whose campaign literature was inclusive instead of exclusive. I will vote for candidates who did not spend their campaign taking cheap and petty shots at the opposition's community and religious group.

Tomorrow I will be voting for:

Nahum Marcus
Sol Blisko
David Sussman

I will be voting YES on the budget in hopes that we can get this district out of this cycle of austerity.

I will be voting YES on pre-K busing to ensure that this service is provided to ALL district children equitably.

I urge everyone who cares about the state of our community and who yearns for amity instead of the enmity we have seen in recent years to vote the same.

Each and every resident of SD15 MUST vote. In elections such as these, every vote DOES count. In past years, elections have been decided by a margin of very few votes - that vote could be yours.

(Stepping off my soapbox - at least until my next post...)

Well done OM!

I was getting tired of hearing that rubbish from Greenbaum and her running mates about voting no on the budget and voting no on Pre-K busing. It's amazing that they take people for such fools.

What kind of example do they set by voting NO just for spite? Their rationalization for voting NO is such gibberish, that I have yet to encounter anyone that accepts their reasoning - even those people who swear by the candidates.

These commenters have no dignity just like the candidates they are supporting. Stealing signs and spewing bigotry does not win elections. Someday they will realize this.

I know a lot about the wrong guys. A lot of name recognition. I know almost nothing about the right guys.

You should spend at least much time covering the right guys.

Skelos made it very clear last night on television that Long Island will not see a windfall of money from Albany like it did this year.

With a budget of .9% this year, we're looking at a double digit budget next year.

We haven't heard anything about what is right about the candidates OrthoMom endorses on the issues in particular.

Last year, the Orthodox candidates said the same thing: "For all the children", yet Michael Hatten has been the only one to step up to the plate.

Be careful what you wish for.

If the ALPS candidates are elected it will be a fiscal nightmare for the communiy.

Skelos will not be able to "bring home the bacon" next year, athough it's an election year for him. His minion, Mistero, is pushing hard for the ALPS candidates. What does that say about Skelos's and his newspaper spin? Draw your own conclusions.

Please VOTE.

I said plenty about what makes the candidates I am endorsing "right". Unfortunately, the candidates I think are "wrong" have behaved so egregiously during this campaign that my vote becomes as much one against their bigotry and dishonesty as it is a vote for their opponents' fitness as candidates. That's what happens when candidates play the religion and hatred card instead of making their campaign about the issues. It can backfire on them and force people to vote against them simply to have anyone BUT them in office.

As I noted, that is not the case here, as the candidates I endorsed bring qualities to the table that make them good candidates whoever their opposition. But the ALPS candidates' reprehensible rhetoric just made my decision even easier.

Being a member of the orthodox community in district 15, I was extremely disheartened to see a man in a kippah last night removing Greenbaum, etal lawn signs from a corner and stashing it in his car. It was a chillul hashem. I feel that some of us are finding ourselves living in glass houses. Plese Mr. Sussman, Dr. Blisko or Mr. Marcus - if any of you are reading this, please implore your people to conduct themselves in the proper fashion.

if what you say happened, that is indeed terrible. of course we have no idea who you are or your agenda is alleging what you are alleging. whereas there are actual police reports filed regarding marcus/blisko/sussman signs being stolen in broad daylight, some by Lawrence Middle students who then threatened the homeowner who called them to task by waving the sticks from the sign in her and her small childrens' faces.

The law states we can put no more than 2% of any given years budget away in reserves. According to Fitzsimmons this budget up for vote gives us the 2% cushion and in addition our reserves according to fitzsimmons(who I am sure is not for the orthodox) are very healthy. State aid next yearis for next year and has no bearing on this years budget. I will vote YES to take us off austerity.

Somehow I get the feeling that despite your love of that phrase, you don't think that "ALL THE CHILDREN" should get free pre-K busing.

1:35 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

That's not true. I think that universal pre-k is great and I put all of my kids in pre-k when they were babies. Even private pre-k.

As a parent and a medical professional, and having sent my children on a bus for pre-k, there were matrons, seat belts and they received door-to-door service. The way the district put this pre-k busing thing up, it is about safety for ALL THE CHILDREN. You realize that the public school children will have no matrons and on the corners too, right?

The way the referendum was written, it was very short sighted. If, for instance, they put the pre-k busing out for a bid, we would have known the true costs and would have known from the beginning what we were dealing with. But no. It was pushed along without any thought of the safety of all the children.

It is beyond me why people can't look at the whole picture rather than think that every single submission on this blog is anti- something - anti-ortho, anti-public school, anti- whatever.

I have been on both sides of the fence and it is not a safe referendum.

G-d forbid there is an incident on these buses. You know what? You knew from the onset that there would be no matrons, no door to door and nobody checking seat belts (driver cannot leave the seat).

That means that you KNEW of the conditions of transporting your child on those buses. You would be partly liable if something should (G-d forbid)happen.

I would have liked this to have been explored further. It isn't good the way it was written.

As a concerned parent, if I had to send my child to pre-k on a bus, it wouldn't be under these conditions. I would rather carpool just drive my child.

You obviously learned NOTHING from the Nazis. They didn't care if you were Ortho or not. To them a Jew was a JEW and if you were a JEW you were garbage and worthy of being thrown into the furnace. If you are anti Ortho, you are anti Jew and no better than a nazi.

2:38 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Thank you for your response 2:34 PM. I sincerely hope that is the case with all the parents. I also hope this goes smoothly too.

Even though my children are grown, I do worry about others, as I see nightmares in the Emergency Room every day regarding children and buses.

Here is another safety tip: Don't give your children anything to eat while on the bus either: if they are choking, nobody will notice. We've had many cases of this happen.

11:25 AM

And another bigot shows their true colors. I am truly sick to here from you and the rest of you who made this a bias issue instead of an education issue. The only thing I can say is time will tell. We have no reason to have our neighbor's children have a poor education and become low level employees. It is in our best interest to raise the level or education and expection for all children in the community and see to it that each and every child who lives here meets their individual potential. We are not looking to have kids roaming the streets, with no self-esteem and no self-confidence. We are not looking to have our neighbor's or the next neighborhood's children have low reading, writing and math scores. The Lawrence Public School system was always something to be proud of and we wish to make it that way again. We take pride in knowing that The Lawrence Public School students were accepted in the top Colleges. We take pride in hearing that they accomplished their goals and they have come back to the community to serve proudly. We all go to the same hospitals and we trust the doctors, nurses and technicians that are made up of both your children and ours. It takes a whole community with different talents and gifts to make it work. If your child is the best cardiologist around, I am going to go to him, even if their is an orthodox doctor in the neighborhood. G-d gives different children different abilities and different talents, and each one of the children in the neighborhood is entitled to develop the talents that G-d had bestowed upon them.

OK? Did we get that clear? If the Sussman, Blisko, Marcus team wins, we will just have to give them a chance to prove themselves and if they do, you will just have to admit they are doing a good job. Can YOU live with that? Or are you going to knock them, and block them every step of the way? WE are not leaving. WE are going to continue living here, building here, and having our children settle in here. IF YOU can't stand that, it is YOU that will have to move out. We have no problem having YOU as neighbors. Live and let live. IF YOU can't swallow having us as neighbors, if YOU can't understand what bigotry and hatred can do to a person, a family, a neighborhood and entire nation, then I feel very sorry for you, because you don't understand what it means for someone to come up with a plan and have an entire country be brainwashed enough by hatred to kill 6,000,000 million jews and countless others who where hated by him and his arian perfect nation.

It is true. Voters were unable to find parking spots all morning because the parking was blocked by cars despite there being no lines at the actual polls. This was only straightened out once calls were made to complain. So the dirty trick worked for a couple of hours enough to do at least some damage.

5:09 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

If it is the morning, then you have a big problem parking because all the spaces are taken due to schools AND voting.

The important thing is that you got out to vote.

Even on a regular day, do you know how hard it is to find a space at the middle school anyway?

Don't blame EVERYTHING on the other side - interrupting the school's parking lot for the sake of keeping voters away doesn't make sense, don't work for too long and people have better things to do with their time.

The new board is going to go FAR and bring the appropriate changes necessary to make the Lawrence Public School System number ONE once again. Something we can all be proud of.

maybe it's because you ARE the orthodox community.

Maybe it's just because we are just plain Community Members who are paying taxes and are not getting any services for those taxes we are paying. Maybe that is because YOU guys decided to cut all those services and take them away from OUR kids and keep them only for the Public School kids, saying that since we can afford to pay for private schools we can afford to pay for that as well.

Well YOU don't know who can afford what, and we will thank you to keep your hands and your noses out of our pockets. You all live in this wealthy community as well, and pay high taxes as well, and guess what? You don't have to shell out tens of thousands of dollars for tuitions, so YOU guys can afford to pay for those services more than we can. So stop being so damned selfish and petty. We deserve something back for the school taxes we are paying. Had any of you been the least bit fair to the private school community, no one would have even thought about joining YOUR school board. But since you guys could care less if our kids lived or died, we had to stand up for ourselves and be counted. We had no choice but to step in and stop allowing everything be denied to our kids. They are as deserving as yours and as entitled as members in this community to the same services just by being a member of the community and taxpayers whether or not they use the Public School System or not.

nobody is telling you that your kids have to go to those schools...YOU CHOOSE to send your children to those schools and pay the tuition for it...so if you want to get what you're paying your taxes for, send your kids to the public schools...and also YOUR children do receive benefits from the public schools...what bus system takes them to those schools? how about if any of your children come out retarded or messed up? who provides the services for them to go to special schools? don't act like you're being victimized because you are living in a community and paying taxes like everyone else, yet CHOOSE to send your children to private schools and pay for that...you say you're standing up for yourselves and trying to get your tax-paying money's worth, yet what you're standing up for makes no sense...it's not OUR fault that YOU pay all that tuition....get over yourselves.

Boy that nut is sure eager to join the "Orthodox little league". Let's see, these games do not get any county, town, or village support so the parents pay all fees, and the uniforms tend to be just a shirt and cap. The kids are in a double program at school so they do not have much time to practice and so are only as good as raw talent will take them. Oh did I mention that they never get to play in the Cedarhurst Park stadium or march in the little league parade! Welome aboard :-)

What the psychos are saying is that because the Sunday LL uses public fields they may have to let all kids play.

1:49 AM is wrong. The school board cannot vote for more than what the state mandates. Those safety nets were put in place so that private schools could not bankrupt a public school system - anywhere in the state - not just here.

We'll see what transpires. There are a lot of eyes and ears on the Lawrence School District now.

It is in the Lawrence School District policy that groups who use district property must not exclude others from joining - even if there is a fee. That would be discrimination because you are using a public school district property (even if you are paying for it), and you would be showing exclusiveness otherwise.

Go to the link below and read it for yourself:

The funniest thing on this blog is the guy who wants to join the little league. Whoever you are please let us know which team you want to join so we can see how your little kid will just love playing with all these little jews who you must despise. Really keep us informed. And the very best will be when your little son or daughter wears his Young Israel of Woodmere or Lawrence tee-shirt to school and tells his friends what a nut job you are. Really let this blog know so Larry Gordon can put his picture in the local rag or better maybe the Herald will run a full coverage of the love feast. I am sure your kid will love you dad. Hey if your kid is any good please join YIW we need the help and I go to the games anyway. I can't control my laughter and I really really want to see so we can be friends, really if you join and stick it out we will be friends. I like scotch and cigars, do you?

Don't make fun on account of the children.

If you want a winning team, I'll pass the info about YIW needing good ball players.

If it makes YIW a winning team, and the spirit of doing it for the CHILDREN are really on your agenda, nobody would mind sharing a victory drink and cigar.

But don't start making fun of people who are not like you. Instead of being so negative, as long as you are on school property, do right by ALL THE CHILDREN, if they can help your teams out.

To anon 10:36

I am not the so-called "nut job" posting about the NCSY baseball (is it NCSY? I'm assuming). I have not posted on this subject at all, but I'm really offended by your remarks. From the tone of your last post, you probably couldn't care less, but you really should care if you are a decent human being.

My 8 year old son loves to play baseball. He plays on the Lawrence-Cedarhurst Little League (whose teams dont routinely hold practices, btw). When I saw at the beginning of the season how many teams the synagogue league has, I thought maybe he can join that league too, since there is no such thing as too much baseball for him and there would be no conflict with game dates (Saturday/Sunday).

After some thought, I figured he wouldn't be accepted and nixed opening that can of worms. It appears that I was right, based on your comments and mockery.

For the record, my son is a "little jew" (your words) who does not happen to attend a yeshiva. He does not wear tzi-tzis and only wears a kipah when reciting a bracha, davening in shul, or for a religious occassion (bris, wedding, seder, etc).

FYI, he davens the whole service in an orthdox shul most every shabbat. He learned the old fashioned way, from his grandpa and dad. He is quite proud of being a "little jew" and would have no problem wearing any t-shirt. His favorite tee is his Yankees shirt, written in all Hebrew.

I am not interested in any love fest. I was interested in my son playing more ball with an opportunity to meet more friends who have an interest in baseball.

How sad that it turns out that I was right - my "little (un-orthodox) jew" would not be accepted by you.

If you abhor anti-semitism (I as do) than you should abhor sentiments such as yours, because you're clearly anti-anybody but people who live exactly as you do.

Oh, and you missed out on a really good, sportsmanlike ballplayer.

If you can't figure out why anti-semitism exists, look in the nearest mirror.

I am quite sure that ANY Jewish boy or girl is invited to join any of the synagogue teams that make up the league.

I am also very cetain that the parents would be treated with the utmost respect and may even make some real friends.

Feel free to try if that is a real interest and not some bizarre political point.

I will simply say that any request by non-Jewish young people to join a synagogue league would be responded to with respect, but I do not thnk it is an issue that will need to be dealt with.

Let's put this nonsense behind us. We all agree we should be volunteering for the fire department, a hospital, a library, THE SCHOOLS, etc. There are many ways we can build the community together, rather than attacking each other on a blog.

First of all, how dare anybody call anybody else a NAZI. That is disgusting and so immature, PLEASE GROW UP.

You're adults, right? Hi, I'm a high school student. I go to Lawrence High School.
So if you're adults, please act like it.

Perhaps you think you are benefiting all of the children, but I disagree.
Perhaps Pre-K busing is a PRIORITY for you. Are you lazy? When I went to Pre-K, my mother dropped me off and picked me up every day. If you're so g-ddamn unhappy about that, why don't you carpool or something?
It is so unnecessary. And as somebody else said, safety is an issue! Who's going to check their seatbelts, you ask? Well, I don't know. Sure, mothers and fathers will be there when they are picked up to walk them on, but what about as they leave? Please use your heads.

Next, while you use up money on unnecessary busing, the public schools suffer. We lose money for salaries. How many teachers are going to have to be fired this year, hm? We can't afford them!
This is especially bad for Honors students. With less teachers available to teach, there will be less periods in which honors classes will be taught and it will be much harder to fit them all into schedules. Basically, students that deserve to be in honors or AP classes will be forced to take regents classes.
It's not right. That doesn't just affect our educations NOW, but it can affect are futures in a big way - the #1 thing colleges look for these days is classes and credits, not necessarily grades, no matter how high they may be at a regents level.

Not to mention all of the extracurriculars we may lose. And of course the key in extracurricular is "extra" but it is another necessity for high school students looking to get into a good school. I am very involved in multiple clubs and activities. I don't know what I'd do with myself if they were taken away from me.

My concern, and likewise with most of my peers, is my future - getting the requirements that I need NOW so I can get into the best school possible and get a decent job.
You know why?
So that I can move the Hell away from the 5 Towns.

I may not be 100% informed on the issues that you all have been discussing, but at least I've attempted to relay my arguments in a mature and polite manner.

Racism is a huge problem in this community... but it goes both way. And don't you dare try to deny that.

5:34...I applaud you for a very honest post. You're 100% right that you need those AP classes and extracurricular activites to compete.

I am a private school parent and have tremendous concerns about the future of the public school students such as yourself, who have applied themselves, worked hard, etc., only to be sabotaged by those who don't think the above mentioned programs are critical.

I hear you, but I'm not the suing type. I'll avoid my kid being ostracized together.

When my oldest was 18 months, I joined a Mommmy & Me at the Cedarhurst JCC. I was the only non-orthodox there. A few had sheitels on, while wearing gym clothes (ie., thong-type leotards over tights peeking out from under skirts), but I digress.

Anyway, nobody would give me or my baby the time of day. After the second class the "teacher" pulled me aside and told me I didn't belong in that class and she would have all my money refunded. She wasn't saying I wasn't welcome by her - she saw how I was treated and felt terrible about it.

You know what? I think that is a wonderful idea. I am also a high school student, and i think that it would be great to see more diversity among our clubs. For example, the high school has a hebrew culture club every other tuesday, in which many students, jewish and non jewish, get together and discuss holidays, culture, and israel's past and present. I would also love to see clubs in yeshivas available to public school students, as the only way we, as fellow community members, can truly understand each other is if we and our families can talk and get together.

To the public school student. Please get your facts stragiht and then join in the debate. Check the number of teachers(380ish) the nymber of children(3200ish) and the number of buildings in the public schools. Check the number of employees (all together around 800). Now sutract out a fair percentage( be true to yourself and honest) for the large private school proportion in this district. The teachers are none because I have all ready subtracted the number used for the PIPPS program. Now, compare this to other Districts but be sure to subtract out their private contingencies(Great Neck for instance has a large number of private School children). Now look at the budgets of those other Districts and look at their scores on achievment tests. Are we equal, are we spending much more money comparatively and getting less. Do we have more teachers, and are getting less or do we need more teachers? Do the homework my friend and get back to us. I am public school also.

8:42 PM: I hear you. But I would have stayed the course and I would have had the teacher speak to the OTHER parents. She was encouraging that kind of behavior rather than to stick to the core values of what the JCC represents.

But don't kid yourself either. JCC does support and value traditional Jewish values. Maybe not the right-wing Orthodox, but surely the Black and Hispanic population that use the FTCC will have a very difficult time.

12:47 :

Why would I force someone to be friendly to me? As a fairly new mother I was there for social interaction for my daughter and to meet other mothers with kids the same age.

This was 10 years ago and the details don't really matter. I only brought it up in light of the fact that the YIW baseball dad mocked the fact that anyone non-orthodox would want to join the synagogue little league.

It illustrates the point that while many 5T orthodox people claim that all public school people are anti-semitic, the fact is (in my experience) the orthodox want nothing to do with non-orthos. The repeated cries of "ANTI-SEMITISM!!" gives an excuse for the childish comments and really nasty behavior. The hate is coming from both "sides" and the rhetoric is very frustrating for normal people who don't hold hate and hidden agendas.

Seriously, the fact is I run a traditional Jewish household. (albeit not to MO or frum standards). My children do not attend a Yeshiva, and we have worked very hard to make sure they are learned in Judaism appropriate for their ages, and they are very proud to be Jewish. Yet, I am labeled an anti-semite because I am pro-public school (my kids dont even attend the LPS) and my children's friends are of all religions and races.

Does this make any sense? If I am going to be labeled an anti-semite, then clearly anyone who thinks that taxes levied for public schools should be used on educational programs for public school children first and foremost is an anti-semite. Anti-semites. All of them.

I will absolutely not hide behind the bus matron issue to give my reason for voting against pre-k busing. I was totally against it, with or without matrons. This is something that benefits parents, not children. The GAT/E program was shredded ... pre-k busing is more important. How is that defensible other than responding that I'm an anti-semite and don't want the orthodox to "have anything".

Everyone should have everything they need, IMO. There is ZERO anyone can do about the teachers' contracts. The teachers are protected with their steps and tenure by Albany. There is not one thing the new board can do about it. All this talk of paying teachers based on their students' test scores is nonsense and everyone knows it.

I did not appreciate Clements staging protests as I do not appreciate any teachers discussing these issues with their students. That is another matter entirely from the budget, however.

There is nothing to cut from teachers - they are protected by NYS Education Law. The only cuts that can be made affect the students directly and that is just not fair. The kids are innocents in all of this fighting.

Eh. I guess I'm kind of done talking about these issues. It appears that the lines have been drawn and that is that.

Yes, of course. I am in total agreement that if we pay for public pre-k bussing, we should pay for private as well.

Why is the word "only" in quotation marks? More mockery? Can you even have a polite discussion? Is there something I'm missing that makes pre-k an educational issue or one that benefits any child?

I will qualify my statement and add that I am against any pre-k bussing (public and private) while cuts are being made K-12.

If we were flush in SD15, then everyone should have everything they want and need. But while there are cuts directly to education (and no money for technology, needed repairs or a working phone system) then IMO, pre-k bussing FOR ANYONE is frivolous.

To 2:45 pm. To say there is nothing to be done about the teachers contract is to dismiss the actions of the Board that passed that contract on June 20 of last year. 5 years of raises without any time givebacks in spite of some of the lowest scores in Nassau County. No academic guideposts or achievement milestones needed for the raises to kick in year after year after year. Please look at the teacher student ratio and money spent on the system before you imply that needed money is being siphoned away from the public schools. Building repairs and needed computers were not accomphlished because previous Bds continued to present budgets that were so out of joint with the reality of our economic situation that the voters turned them down. I offer this explanation not to flame the flames but to establish a logical basis to move forward. Last year the Board (Parise's) presented a budget that would have raised our taxes by several million dollars more than austerity. The public turned this down yet they still had to give back 6 million dollars to the taxpayers. Had the Bd put a lower budget forward it would have passed and we would have been able to begin repairs and buy computers. Now, the ball is in the court of the new Bd. Let us watch and see if they take the ball and run with it. If not shame on them, if so let us all get together.

9:35:

I am not dismissing what happened. All I am saying is that moving forward, there is nothing that can be done about the contracts at this time. "Achievement based milestones" are not allowable. Why is this so difficult to understand? Are there any stronger lobbyists in Albany than the teachers union?

I don't have to look at the contracts to know that money is being siphoned out of the public schools. That was last year...I'm talking about this year's budget and moving forward.

I'm not blaming the current board for not making necessary repairs, since I credit Hatten for taking a serious interest in that. Again, I want the current board to move forward responsibly. If you want to play the blame game though, the recently re-elected Sussman is on that board for how many years now?

Unfortunately you still want me to respond to the past when I want to move on. But ok, honestly, not passing the budget was never solely about the money, so really you shouldn't go there. When a budget was put up for less than what an austerity budget would have been that year, it was voted down. Clear intent.

It is pointless to argue about the past. I am hoping that the new board will not let their anger toward the teachers union cloud their judgement to negatively impact the public school children. Is that too much to ask?

How is there to be enough money to maintain what the LPS still does have, added funds for pre-k bussing, with a budget that is 2 points lower than the inflation rate?

"i thought this blog was about the district? public schools? election?...how did it turn into a little league battle? strangee "

It isn't strange, because the problems we are having with the Us V Them are all encompassing. We should not have this divisiveness in the community. There needs to be more understanding between human beings before we can solve the school issues.

Unless tolerance is only wanted on a one-way basis by the majority? I'm hoping that is not the case.

I think everyone who is interested should go to the Newsday website and look at the school report cards. many things will come to light. All complex but some revealing. Right noe the average student teacher ratio on Long Island is 12.6 to 1 while we have 10.2 to one. While the average cost per student on long Island is in the 15 thousand range ours is 18. We have the 5th highest teacher salary in Nassau County but if you added up years of service it is number one. The point here is that ours is not an underfunded system. We obviously need more computers and to fix up our buildings and fields but we must look at accountability and transparency. We have too many teachers and too many resources for the product we are producing. I call on the Board to act responsibly and the PTAs and public leaders to step up to the plate to help let us know where our currnt system is not perfroming.

We blame the Lawrence Public Schools for low test scores and financial waste, but shouldn't we clean the dreck out of our barns first? The rate at which tuition dollars are burnt in the local yeshivas suggests abundant stupidity and/or theft. A dirty little secret is that several of the more right wing yeshivas are contributing to a generation of frum know-nothings, who regularly fail Regents exams in math and other subjects (when they are not illegally fed the test answers by their teachers.)

Serious question--curiousity only, no "real" opinion: Do orthodox children growing up in the Five Towns have a real chance to abandon the ortho lifestyle? In other words, DO THEY HAVE A CHOICE IN LIFE? Is it much different than the FLDS throughout Utah, AZ, TX, and CO? Obviously, I realize the FLDS is a more extreme bubble. but they are still both bubbles? True?

I have lived in Manhattan/Lawrence my whole life, and I find it progressively more offensive how non-Jews are treated in the Five Towns...Talk about bigotry?

As far as walking in the streets, of course I have no problem with it...However, from a safety standpoint, it is EXTREMELY dangerous on Friday/Saturday nights. I realize that many Orthos are attempting to make a point, while many others also are not--they are simply minding their own business. However, back Lawrence gets extremely dark and the roads have many bends. I am not sure the Orthos walking 5 abreast realize how difficult it actually is to see them...Just a thought.
