ALPS' Hateful Anti-Orthodox Campaign Condemned by Political Leadership

This week's Jewish Star is a must read. It includes statements from three prominent (and popular) political leaders -- State Senator Dean Skelos, County Executive Thomas Suozzi and Town Supervisor Kate Murray -- condemning the hateful campaign being waged by ALPS (Advocates for Lawrence Public Schools) in support of Greenbaum, Cancelliere and Levey.

Skelos:
The ads referring to the religious beliefs of candidates Nahum Marcus and Solomon Blisko were “inappropriate,” said state Sen. Dean Skelos (R-Rockville Centre) in an interview. In his opinion, they crossed a line. When asked, he said, “No, I would not vote for somebody that did that.” Marcus and Blisko are running on a ticket with David Sussman, who is not Orthodox and currently has children attending Lawrence public schools. “My feeling is that when you run for office, whether it’s the president of the United States, state Senate or school board, it should be about issues — certainly, there’s no place in elections to bring up religion,” Skelos said. He continued, “It should always be about kids and how are we going to best educate our kids? How are we going to control property taxes, which are just choking people? That’s what it should be about — kids’ education and their future — and not a person’s religious beliefs.”

Suozzi:
I am disturbed that the public debate regarding the school board elections in the Lawrence School District has included broad, inflammatory references to “Orthodox Jews.” I am proud of Nassau County’s ethnic diversity and spirit of tolerance. I recognize the differing views of our citizens and I encourage them to participate in community affairs for the betterment of all. In the political arena one would expect the candidates to present a candid presentation of their views and to defend those positions. A campaign is a marketplace of ideas. It is not, however a forum to be used to denigrate an individual or group based upon race, religion, gender, or ethnicity.

There are important issues to grapple with in the school board election taking place in Lawrence. Containment of school tax costs, improvement of student performance and capital repairs to buildings are the issues that should be the focus of the debate. Every resident of the district has a fair and equal right to participate in the process at all levels. No one is disqualified from participation in the American dream because of their level of religious observance.

I would encourage all those seeking office to set an appropriate example as the campaign reaches its conclusion and speak only to the issues.
Kate Murray:
It is my belief that divisiveness is never in the best interests of education. The introduction of dialogue that divides communities does not serve the students of any school system.
Pam Greenbaum's reaction to the furor surrounding the ads: "They’re playing the religion card." In a world where you can bully your critics with frivolous lawsuits yet manage to portray them as bullies, accusing the Orthodox of "playing the religion card" is a piece of cake.

Next week: Pam Greenbaum explains how Mel Gibson is a victim of religious hatred and intolerance.

Also, Meyer Fertig makes made a great case for Pam and Stan's removal even if they weren't up for election:

Perhaps most disqualifying, however, is her recent violation, along with fellow board member Stan Kopilow, of a basic tenet of the Lawrence School District Officer and Employee Code of Ethics, adopted by the school board on
November 16, 2004 and available
online at www.lawrence.org/codeofethics.
htm.

Article Two (2) says: An officer or
employee ... shall not disclose information regarding any matters discussed in an executive session of the Board whether such information is deemed confidential or not.

The code of ethics clearly states that any person who shall knowingly and intentionally violate any of the provisions of the board’s code of ethics and its accompanying regulation may be fined, suspended or removed from office or employment, as the case may be, in the manner provided by law.

Greenbaum and Kopilow, arguably, violated this code and breached the public trust in the course of their bitter arguments against the money-saving settlement with the Kulanu Torah Academy several weeks ago. This matter ought to be examined in greater detail and appropriate action taken.

These ads were a colossal blunder that have lost the ALPS canidates support in their own community. Playing dirty works sometimes for a candidates' supporters, but it is almost always inadvisable for the candidates themselves. Have others do the dirty work for you. It's unseemly and too much of a crapshoot in terms of losing support.

What Pam, Levey and Maribel did would have been advised against be any campaign strategist. For good reason.

Good for the local pols for getting involved in this terrible situation. I can't believe we are dealing with this in 2007, in the USA.

In 2001, Mark Green deflated his Mayoral campaign by his dubious connection to a flier that was circulated in the frum community that depicted Freddy Ferrer kissing Al Sharpton's behind.

Green was the front runner and the anticipated winner of the election. But his association with the offensive and divisive flier was a huge blow to his support and momentum.

The flier is credited for pushing Bloomberg -- who experienced a subtle boost in popularity from Rudy Giuliani who was stumping for him -- over the edge to victory.

Though it's still too early to make predictions, it's safe to say that no matter where or when, fools ignore history at their own expense.

Why is it this propaganda going on. Does anyone not care about the children? Did Asher Mansdorf not say we are spending 500,000 on furniture, why is that not important. We will have to walk to the corner no matron, but yet we are still talking about the ads. Enough time to discuss our kids.

Uh, the passage you point out doesn't mention the ads. It mentions the fact that Greenbaum and Kopilow decided to discuss something from the executive session in the open session, and breach confidentiality. That also seems to be grounds for dismissal from the board, according to Mayer Fertig.

(Then again, I guess they said the same thing last time they screwed up an election)

I am a PS parent - and not part of ALPS because of Bruce Sher and the LTA being part of it.

Hopefully, the parents will learn that this can never happen again, because it clouds the waters when it comes to discussing the needs of our children.

It's frankly quite shocking to me that people who are supposedly advocates for education can't write like literate adults. Let me see if I can try (edits are in brackets):

Public or Private community there is always one person who all of a sudden is the English teacher. Instead of focusing on $500,000 on furniture, which should go to busing, you are correcting people's English. If this makes you feel superior, then go ahead. I understand people like you, the need to put down other people because you are so unhappy in your own life. You know kids have problems probably social issues, piece of advice, get a life, find a new hobby work with your kids. Making light of important issues with your petty garbage belongs exactly there. The garbage.

Do you mean that you have a problem with the money spent on furniture for the public schools? Are you saying that if it doesn't benefit you directly, it's not worth it and should not be spent?
I thought that you were talking about the benefit of ALL the children, or is it just a "campaign slang".

I am a public school parent and I think if this district spends 500,000 on furniture when are kids are 26 to a class, can't afford bus matrons, and needs technology, then we need a WHOLE NEW BOARD. I am sorry furniture????

Did Mr. Skelos chastise Mr. Mistero for supporting the ads and having his republican machine work the phones for the ALPS candidates?

Did Mrs. Murray do the same? Or Mr. Suozzi?

Skeolos & Murray have the political influence to put Mr. Mistero on the right track.

I'm not sure what expense furniture is about, but I'd hate to have another pie thrown in my face if I was an alps member and "furniture" is actually desks and chairs for students.I'm sure no one wants children standing in the classrooms.

8:08 AM

Mistero had nothing to do with those ads. He is the campaign manager for Skelos - do you think he would be stupid enough to go against his boss and put those kinds of ads out??? It is clearly Bruce Sher and LTA. Mistero told the ALPS group to find another place to meet.

So, I read that there will be no 3 year olds bused to pre-K. They must be 4 years old by December 1st. That means there is no need for car seats on the bus.

All parents will be walking to the bus stops next year - both public and private, to get their children on the buses. No matrons. Still doesn't sound safe.

8:23 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

as a PUBLIC SCHOOL PARENT I HOPE NO ONE IS UNDER THE IMPRESSION THAT MATRONS FOR 4 YEAR OLDS ARE MORE IMPORTANT THAN DESKS AND CHAIRS FOR ALL THE CLASSROOMS, if matrons are so important than do not send your child on the bus, the whole district is only a few miles end to end anyway, what's the big deal.

The Nassau Herald was 90% about these elections this week, including opinions, apologies and statements.

If we could only channel all of those frustrations into something positive - to be able to sit and plan out a committee to meet the private school needs along with the public school needs and bring the recommendations to the school board, I think we'd have a good thing going.

Certainly, parents in our community are intelligent and I think many can get past the negativity that this campaign has been showering over the heads of all of our children.

It's interesting to see that many agree that this campaigning has gone too far - on both sides. We have to work on our conflict resolution skills and become examples to our children. We cannot teach them one thing in the home, one thing at school and then something totally different when it comes to interaction with other members of the community. Both sides need to work on this. This election has only brought out the ugly that both sides have had against each other for many years now. Like a boil coming to a head.

The Bd under Asher has begun the process. Low taxes, universal preK and also bussing. Something for everyone. ALPS went negative. Levey incendiary. However there is room to continue Mansdorf policy of moderation. Fix buildings, extend buyins for everyone. Actually teach the at risk population rather than allow the poor scores to be excused behind a turf battle. PTA and BD should be united in wanting whats best for children and district. This should be buy in by entire community so that initiatives can be supported.Sharing, building bridges and standing up to special interests so that community can come together and grow. Sounds like a plan.

Larry Gordon is a neutral party to what is transpiring in the ridiculous 5 Towns.
As a frequent visitor from Queens, it's actually quite entertaining to see this Pam Greenbaum & her cheerleading crew shoot themselves in the metaphoric foot over & over again.

I read the 5 Towns Jewish Times weekly, and Larry Gordon is quite impartial when it comes to what's going on.
Of course, as the editor he has the right to express himself when he feels an injustice taking place, just as you, the reader, have the option of writing a letter to the editor to either agree or not.

May the ugly, needs a hairstylist real bad Pam Greenbaum & her ilk lose by overwhelming numbers so they can seriously consider putting their homes for sale & perhaps moving to an area more in sync with their radical beliefs & bigotry..... but I'm not sure such a place still exists as most of the rest of our country are tolerant of the beliefs of others.

The comments from Murray and Skelos are less than nothing. Mistero has a Greenbaum sign by his headquarters and his men were handing out flyers Friday Nite stating"Stop the Current Orthodox controlled Bd fom Dismantling our Public Schools! Mistero and his republicans have taken aim, even after the storm of controversy. Skelos and Murray either do not care or have no clout. Maybe they think a few kind words will distract while the "coup de grace" is shoved in by Mistero and the Inwood Republicans.

10:20 PM

Look , there is no reason for anyone to get upset. Mistero never apologized for the ads or took his sign down backing the Alps team. He backed Licatesi 5 years ago. Even had his picture up in the clubhouse I'm told. Point is, this is a democracy and those are the people Mistero chooses to back. If you don't like it, vote him and his friends out of office. Last I looked the Sanitation Commisioner won, Mistero is Skelos' campaign manager and Mistero is stronger than ever passing out Greenbaum, Cancelliere and Levey literature attacking the Othodox controlled Board.

10:38 PM

Did anyone really think Murray or Skelos really wanted to stop Mistero? Either one could have made him an offer he could not refuse. Murray controls his day job and Skelos is essentially highest ranking REpublican in State and falls over Mr. Mistero as his campaign manager.(Bloomberg is not a real Republican). Point is, neither one really cares. They obviously feel the Republican Party can do quite well without the"Orthodox controlled Board",that is the flyer that Mr. Misteros group passed out from Republican Headquarters Friday nite. Thank goodness for Suozzi and Toback.

The area that greenbaum would have to move to would be Inwood- but wait I'm not sure she likes "those" people either,.I think her quote in the Nassau Herald had something to do with the "race card"- does anyone remember the talks of the princeton plan-plenty of pams big campaign workers refused to send their kids to #2 school. I guess they wanted to keep their "other side of the tracks" elitist schools. If I remember they weren' t willing to "mix" maybe that is what she meant by the "race card"

I just saw the News12 report about the school board elections tonight (Monday). Asher Mansdorf is a liar. Many people condemned the death threats that were given. I guess Asher did not want to admit to that so the elections go the way he wants. In the newspapers, during a school board meeting at all around town, the thought of death threats against school board members were condemned - by both public school and private school parents. This is the first time I can assuredly say that Asher Mandsdorf is a liar.

What a shame. The 11th hour spit in my face. But you know what? I continue to vote for the best candidate - whether Orthodox or not - tomorrow. Asher once had my support, and trusted him. He is a bold-face liar.

8:50 PM

Condemned by whom? The people who said having people show IDS before they came into meetings would have "a chilling effect on free speech" and then sued a blog. Condemned by whom, the lawyer from ATlantic Beach who explained why the Bd could make people show identification. Condemned by who, the Bd member who said there was never an incident in the Lawrence Schools until he was told there was?Fact is Dr. Mansdorf was never backed by the PTA or the people at meetings. If you have lost confidence in him, then you have an agenda. If you bvelieve he is a liar you are mistaken and probably will be joining your friends at ALPS election hall at Sons Of Italy in Inwood.

I do not belong to ALPS or the LTA. I do not support ALPS because of Bruce Sher and the LTA.

I don't have a specific agenda. I am an issues-driven person and I vote for the BEST candidate.

I personally think that showing ID's before entering a board meeting is a good idea if there were death threats. At least you would be able to keep track, G-d forbid, if something did happen. Sort of like entering an airplane so that everyone is accounted for.

It's sad we have to think this way this day and age, but there are loads of nuts out there and you never know what may happen.

12:25 AM
