Appalling Behavior in Boro Park
The Boro Park rioting has been covered quite thoroughly in the J-blogs already, as well as in the local papers. I would like to add, though: Ugh. This is a huge Chillul Hashem. I'm told by a Boro Park resident that a large majority of the mob seemed to be older teenagers, likely home from Yeshiva on Bein Hazmanim. The worst parts of the coverage:
Update: Another point that comes to mind is that it seems strange that this mob thought it would be advisable to trash and set fires in their own neighborhood. Who's gaining here? They still have to live there.
(NY Daily News)The question is, somehow most of these teenaged boys can be prevented from going online, going to movies, or talking to girls, yet why does no one seem to have any control over them when they decide to go on a destructive rampage?
As rumors spread through the crowd that Schick had been beaten, tensions escalated and hundreds of people in traditional black garb poured onto 16th Ave. from 46th to 50th Sts. They set fire to old magazines, fruit boxes and other trash up and down the avenue.
Firefighters raced to put out at least seven blazes and water down the streets.
Demonstrators smashed the windows of one police cruiser and torched another by throwing a gasoline-soaked rag into its backseat. A helicopter searchlight swept the street, and riot police formed lines along 16th Ave., hollering, "Back on the sidewalk!"
But protesters didn't heed the warnings and ran through the streets, some yelling, "Nazi Germany!" at the officers.

Orthomom-I don't know why I haven't loaded up on Jrants recently, so I'm limited in my traffic. But, I wrote about this last night after seeing the newscast at my home (not NY) and put some current feelings on paper.
This morning, I already have 8 comments. Some of them are quite sad: those who are mad I called our brothers "hoodlums," those who excuse the behavior as fun (!)-fine, that is heshy, but still-and more.
Take a look, and if anyone knows why I'm not loading onto Jrants, drop me a note at orthonomics@gmail.com.
I had not heard this story yet. What are they rioting about? Or is there no even lame pretext, is it just senseless?
likely home from Yeshiva on Bein Hazmanim
Yay! The bochurim are home!
Elie, there is a lame pretext, but I still think it is senseless.
They think they're in Israel.
Terrible chillul Hashem. We're supposed to be better than this.
I completely agree with Orthomom on this. While it is true that Jews should not passively accept abuse and cower before the authorities as they would have done in pre-war Europe, that does not mean that violence of this sort is justified. Very likely the ones who did it do have too much pent up energy and nothing to do now. Someone should organize them to help others with shopping and cleaning for Pesach. That way they would really benefit other Jews and create a kiddush Hashem.
another ironic point is that their actions may have hurt Mr. Schick's business by blocking up the streets that his delivery trucks needed to get through on.
Someone told me the Boro Park Chasidim were just trying to burn their Chametz a few days early.
Seriously, when Chasidim riot, and as some community members say, the reason for attacking the police is the fact that they are upset about getting parking tickets, we are all up "Schick's creek." I think there should be a general boycott of all of Boro Park until the culprits are caught and punished and the leadership, political AND Rabbinic, apologizes to the Police and Jews everywhere. We CAN live without Boro Park.
