Yet More School Board Drama
Newsday wasted no time in covering the story of last night's eleventh-hour contract signing by the outgoing board. The piece also adds credence to rumors that had been floating in the lively comment section of my previous post of an attempt to bring this before the courts to prevent the contract from being signed.
One point in the piece that I find extremely disingenuous is the following two paragraphs:
Does it occur to anyone that perhaps, this isn't about one segment of the community looking to shaft the district's students, but maybe, just maybe, it's an alliance of likeminded people from all segments of the community looking to create a healthy, sustainable, financial environment so that going forward, the needs of all the district children can be met?
In a bit of refreshing honesty, one school board member actually speaks up about the motives behind the manner in which the contract was sneaked in under the wire:
A new teacher's contract approved last night became the latest skirmish in a bitter struggle over control of the Lawrence school board, which will soon be led by an Orthodox Jewish majority that has been sharply critical of district spending. This passage sums up my feelings on the matter:
With just two weeks before the new majority takes over, the rancor between public and private school advocates, many of them from the Orthodox community, landed in court yesterday as three sitting board members unsuccessfully sought a court order to block the vote on the teachers' contract.
The meeting was the last before the new majority takes control of the board, and many private school advocates said they are suspicious of the sudden resolution of a contract dispute that has been going on for a year.I agree completely. This last-minute contract deal saddled the incoming board with a massive financial responsibility, and it did so in a manner that was clearly against the mandate inicated by the voters in the the elections just last month.
"Tonight, the letter of the law was, in fact, upheld but the spirit of the law was trampled upon," said Michael Hattan, one of the new members who will be sworn in next month.
One point in the piece that I find extremely disingenuous is the following two paragraphs:
The three board members who sought the court order were Asher Mansdorf, Murray Forman and David Sussman. Forman and Mansdorf will, along with two new members to be sworn in on July 5, comprise the new Orthodox majority on the panel. The reporter spend a lot of column space setting the stage for the "fact" that the rancor exists solely between the Orthodox and the public school community. Yet that is not the case. David Sussman is neither Orthodox nor a private school parent. The man sends his children to Lawrence public schools, yet somehow, when he makes a point that sums up the fiscal irresponsibility on the part of the outgoing board in signing this contract, it is dismissed as merely "tensions on the board". And when the reporter mentions the fact that three board members voted against the contract, it mentions the Orthodox status of 2 of the 3 - but glosses over the non-Orthodox status of the third?
...Sussman was booed when he spoke against the contract.
"We have a lot of problems in the district and this contract leaves us in the lurch," he said. "We have not adequately discussed how we are going to pay for it."
"Sometimes you have to grab hold of opportunities and the opportunity presented itself that the union was more willing to negotiate harder and give more back because of the political realities" of a new Orthodox Jewish majority on the board, said board member Pamela Greenbaum, one of the four members who supported the new contract.Maybe if everyone were to start being more up-front about their motives and bring some honesty to the table, we can actually get somewhere when it comes to the common goal of helping our children.

where was this article? I think last night was just a complete disaster. I find booing to be completely childish, and found the behavior on both sides was poor.
We the mothers of this community need to put an end to this. Agree to disagree, when tempers run this hot, it never is good. We need to fix this before it is too late.
Maybe if we had more women like pam greenbaum on the board we would actually accomplish something.
You've gotta be kidding. She's the worst of the lot. Isn't she the one who says she'll make the Orthodox community "bleed" whenever the budget is voted down?
Well, I'm not saying I love what she had to say. I would just rather she was honest than use the usual party lines.
The teachers and the guidance counselors are not happy with their contract, they are just happy to have a contract. That alone provides them some stability.
To all the Orthodox board members, it's time you visited the schools, tour them, meet the teachers, talk to the children, see their condition. If you are truly trying to right the wrongs, go find out what they are from their point of view. I will shake your hand, introduce myself and treat you like I've treated every board member before you. I challenge you and you too ortho-mom to stop by and say hello!
If you honestly want to make things better that's a good first step.
personaly i think teachers really aren't payed enough, but taking it from a budget that is already crumbling is not right.
sports stars are payed so much yet the teachers whom are responsable for our kids future are payed next to nothing? (and yes orthomom in most places this is the case, it's nice to hear that somewhere teachers are being payed what they rightfully deserve but it is destressing that it is being done with what sounds like blood money from the district)
HNC - if we could get by with as few teacher's as we have sports stars, they'd get paid more.
Well done. great post, OM.
Signing this contract may be legal. But it would be like GWB going to war with Iran and committing hundreds of thousands of troops to the effort. In December 2007, with a Democrat as a president-elect. Maybe that would be legal. But ethical?
"it is being done with what sounds like blood money from the district"
I would bet that the percentage of the Lawrence homeowner's income that goes to public school education is one of the lowest in the county.
"We are still talking politics here, lets not forget. It's a dirty, bare knuckled, no holds barred business.
The thing with political power is you either have it or you don't. History tells us that people who have it like to use it till the very end"
True=learnj that paragraph is much more accurate than anything anyione learns in public school. Any chanv\ce LPS teachers will teach their students what American Government is really about. See eg Gore v Bush in 2000 where Bush won one election 5-4.
Orthomansforf....Sussman may be neither hear not there, but he has been endorced by the Orthodox for many years....even though he was Board president when the 18 million in reserves was pissed away.

Endorser or not endorsed he is proudly not orthodox. The point Om makes is stop making it all about o's vs. non-o's. It isn't so clear-cut. There are non-private parents who are upset with what's happening here also.
Enough with the mansdorf talk. om and all her commentators have made it very clear that she isnt mansdorf's wife. Givt it up.
25 kids in the same heat that we sat in the ms the other night, not enough money if you ask me. Nice the three went to court, anyone know if the hs roof will ever be fixed, they said they have the money.

At least Pamela Greenbaum has the courage to say what she believes without hiding behind an anonymous blog, OrthoMom. If you really were so sure of what you espouse, why hide?

I don’t believe that there is a common goal of helping our children. I believe that the private school community has one goal: to help their own children. The public school community, on the other hand, has two goals…. to help their own children and to help the children who have no advocates of their own. It galls me that so many private school community members don’t seem to realize that there are a great number of children enrolled in the public schools that unfortunately come from homes, where their parent(s) (or in some cases, where there are no parents, guardians) can help them. That is why the public school parents, teacher and administrators feel so strongly. If not us, then who? If not now, then when? If the private school community does not care to think about the welfare of the children who have no advocates at home, then it is up to the pubic school community to see that their schools are not destroyed by those who choose to not vote for a budget to pass year after year, thus making it more difficult for these very children to succeed in a school and life.
good point, anon. how many black or Hispanic faces were in the audience at the board meeting the other night? where are the parents of the substantial minority community to advocate for the needs of their children? they need not be forgotten, however, and their needs must still be advocated for. don't forget, district 15 has one of the highest poverty rates in Nassau County.
The only thing that happened that month that relates to my post about using power till the end was Mr Clinton handing out pardons till the last hour and swiping all the furniture from the White House.
Both Reagan and GHWB did the same. Carter was busy in last hours getting hostages away from Iran.
don't forget, district 15 has one of the highest poverty rates in Nassau County
Part of what makes the situation so volatile in SD 15-the Ortho Jewish pop in general is one of the wealthiest, and the non Jewish users of public schools are in general non wealthy with a decent amount of poverty.
"I don’t believe that there is a common goal of helping our children. I believe that the private school community has one goal: to help their own children. The public school community, on the other hand, has two goals…. to help their own children"
I agree with a change of two word:
I don’t believe that there is a common goal of helping our children. I believe that the private school community has one goal: to help their own children. The public school community, on the other hand, has one goal…. to help their own children

I don't know who Orthomom is-but per Nassau Herald Mansdorf had a daughter graduate SKA-HALB with some honor. Orthomom appears to have younger kids-than Mansdorf. She appears to be many years younger than Mansdorf.
Hi dude! This is cool i work for you just found our cool site see you at work ... orthomom.blogspot.com And I cannot find... Send the information!

Online Casinos
For the longest time, when people wanted to play table games, they had to get in the car or get on a
plane and head to a casino. This is not the case anymore, as online casinos have popped up all over
the place to help players get the action they are looking for. Some people do not trust online casinos,
but in reality there is no reason why you should ever doubt them. Online casinos are incredibly
easy to use and they are reliable in nature. So how can you find a good online casino? The first
thing that you need is a site that you can trust. Without that, you really do not have much at all.
Online casinos must be trustworthy in how they handle your money and also how they handle the fairness
of the games. You should know that all online casinos are required to submit to regulation from an
independent casino monitoring source.
