Chanuka Consumer Alert!

Please be advised that the ready-to-light gelled olive oil candles pictured here are a fire hazard. The plastic cup can catch fire and liquefy. Please do not attempt to use this product, and please notify anyone else who may have purchased it. I personally have been using this product, which were being sold to benefit my daughter's school.

More here.

Thanks for chasing down a brand name for this product. The Chaptzem blog was talking about this very topic, but did not mention a brand name.

My wife and I are using plastic here too, I'm getting glass tomorrow, בלי נדר

I have that set. They were selling it for remarkably cheap in the fruit store; just $10. It says that it comes with 8 rubber holders for travel use, but mine didn't come with it. Anyone know anything about that?

Also, I am not afraid of the fire because it self-extinguishes after 30 minutes. The wick doesn't osmosisfy the oil well.

Not all plastic cup models are a problem. Here in Israel there is a set with the hechsher of the badatz that I have been using for years and works fine.

Thanks for reporting this, OM. I bought this set but the holders didnt fit into any of the menorahs I am using this year. I was annoyed, but now grateful.

Anon 10:32 - amen to that. Beware also of the wooden based ones that come home covered in aluminum foil. Been there, done that, ruined piano finish !

I've been using these, haven't had a problem yet because they burn out in less than an hour.

Um, doesn't anyone realize that almost all plastic is extremely flamible and puts out toxic fumes when it burns? doesn't anyone in the frum world realize this?

The ONLY Things that it is safe to burn olive oil in is metal and glass. They produce a set of these made of glass that works beautifuly (or they did last year, and I know someone who has them this year).

This should be obvious, and I don't know why so many frum people just don't have a clue. Plastic+fire=bad.

how much more complicated can it get?

Apparently, this problem occurs with both plastic and glass holders.

The distributor has issued a recall on the candles and you can exchange them where you bought them.

We used the pre-fab oil in glass jars this past week in our Eilat hotel lobby. Worked fine, withstood the heat (surrounded by dozens of chanukiyot).

Maybe these are only a problem with those sold in the US market?

To anyone who thinks these oil candles burn out, they don't, they just burn. A family in our community lost their pet and their house when they used these oil candles. Thank G-d that was all they lost.
