Preferential Treatment?

Gotta love these sour grapes:
A group of employees at Montreal's largest French-language school is complaining about extra time off granted to Jewish and Muslim workers who observe religious holidays.

According to a report in la Presse on Tuesday, last year the Commission Scolaire de Montréal (CSDM) paid for 300 days off taken by Jewish and Muslim employees during holidays such as Yom Kippur and Eid ul-Fitr, in addition to regular statutory holidays.

The policy means Jewish and Muslim employees can take two to three extra days off a year, compared to their colleagues.

The concession has angered several employees who launched a petition denouncing "unjust" and preferential treatment based on religious identity.

Riiiight. Because it somehow shows unjustness and preferential treatment to offer a day off to those who might belong to a religion other than Christianity, on which they can celebrate the religious holidays that might actually matter to them. As opposed to Good Friday or Christmas, which mean next to nothing to most Jews and Muslims. Yet the whole darn country gets a day off. But that's not preferential at all.

In any case the non-Jew/non-Muslim has to work more days than the Jew or Muslim employee. Having a system of floating holidays or something of that sort could easily solve that sort of inequity. And why shouldn't they complain considering that they may need to pick up the slack of their absent co-workers.

Uh, right. But don't you think the jews and Muslims would be perfectly happy to have their holidays designated national holidays as their christian coworkers' holidays are?

Not the ones who whine when their coworkers request equitable time off from work for their holidays.

Both the US and Canada are Christian countries with a much higher proportion of Christians than the proportion of Jews in Israel. National holidays reflect the likes of the majority population.

Yes. But let me go through this again, slower this time. The Canadian government designated Christian holidays as national holidays. Most places of business are closed. However, Non-Christians have their own important holidays, which are not designated national holidays, and thus are regular work days. So the companies they work for choose to give them an extra day off to celebrate their holidays as their Christian coworkers were able to do so comfortably. Their Christian coworkers, in turn, complain bitterly. Sweet.

The point is that there is a still a net benefit to the J's and M's, as they get the same holidays as the C's. The fair thing to do would be to give everyone those extra J and M days off, or treat those days as overtime. That, or the J's and M's take pay cuts for missing those days.

OM: why is everyone on your blog so dumb today?

You've attracted quite the following of trolls and losers.

It is unjust to allow some employees to have more days off then others, based on religion. It's really irrelevant whether Christian holidays are declared national holidays or not. The Christian employees didn't force the gov't to declare these days national holidays. And Jews and muslims still get the Christian holidays off, even if they don't actively celebrate them.

The issue is purely a matter of vacation time, not who gets to fulfill specific spiritual needs when.

As someone suggested previously, 3 floating personal days for everyone would solve the problem quite handily for everyone. Not sure why you're so against that.

Things are not good for Jews and other religious minorities in Quebec. Its become very nationalistic and has tried to secede from the rest of Canada a number of times. I'm not surprised that this occurred, not at all.

fifteen years ago when i was a bank officer on the platform, i put in for rosh hashana and yom kippur off... i said i would use them a either personal days or vacation days...whichever they would prefer.. the branch manager then informed me that the "other jew" on the platform had already claimed those days and i could not take them.. after i informed her i would be contacting the labor dept she backed down and claimed she was going to do me this "favor " this year only.. i told her i would work for her on christmas day and on any other christian holiday she needed off.. she was appalled at my suggestion and sent a negative note to human resources about my "attitude" It was only removed after my Rabbi and the Anti-Def league got involved... ONLY 15 YEARS AGO>> can you believe the stupidity out there?

My place of work gives all employees three religious holidays. They can either take off Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur or Christmas, Good Friday, and Easter. When you are hired, you pick your holidays. Muslims, Hindus, and atheists can usually bank the holidays and use them when they want. It works quite well. (Early Fridays are another story all together.)

Ortho-

Do you not realize that jews and muslims are allowed to take of christain holidays but christains cant take of jewish holidys? How does this strike you as fair?

Jewish workers are getting paid more than christain workers. With all the crap long island jews complain about (i.e. private v public school), they are in no position to criticize this legitimate complaint.

This strikes me as fair because the Jewish and Muslim workers are not given a choice about the Christian holidays. I can assure you that although I get the day off for Christmas (my office is closed), if I was given the choice to give up a day of pay to take off for a Jewish holiday, or to work on a Christian holiday in exchange, I would surely prefer to work on Christmas or Good friday. However, that choice is not being given to these workers in question.

That is why they should not be docked pay for celebrating their holidays.

I am not Jewish, Muslim, Christian, Catholic, or any other particular religion. However, I am a seventeen-year-old girl who lives in a family of all four of those, plus a few more pagan denominations. I'm spiritual, but hate the conflict that arises from the drama of religion. I agree with plenty of values found in religion, but the hate between different denominations disturbs me. To me, being homophobic, against another's religion, or racist are pretty much one and the same, just a different variety of prejudice.

There is nothing wrong with taking religious holidays, but I've often complained to my school, as well as workplace about the lack of equality in those holidays. My younger sister converted to Judaism, but has to take a cut from class on her own religious holidays. Some Christians point out the fact that there are several religious holidays during the two-week "winter-break" we get in December, but the fact is that those holidays aren't as important to Muslims, Jews, and Pagans as Christmas is to Christians. Most Jews would rather have Yom Kippur off. You know, the High Holy Days.

I'm not saying one group in particular should get more days off than another, I simply agree with the fact that people should be allowed to CHOOSE their days off. I don't like missing two-weeks of school in December simply because of Christian holidays. I'd much prefer having other days off instead.

I'm also appalled by several of the comments left here. Show some decency and maturity people! I'm SEVENTEEN, and seem to have more class than most of you. Please. You may have a different opinion, but show some respect for a person who defends theirs with intelligence, rather than prejudice, and name-calling.
