A family in Bayswater had a terrible fire erev Yom Tov and their house that they were renting completely burned down. B”H they all got out okay, but the father who saved the entire family plus all the tenants in the house, has some 3rd degree burns and cuts. This happened at 4am on Sunday. The family of 7 (5 kids ranging from 6 months to 13 years), have lost everything they own. There was no insurance. please call the numbers posted on the blog, as very specific items are needed; for instance, a full-size crib and bedding for it, pillows quilts and other household items. Please check with Ilanit or Batia, so there is no redundancy.
Also, if anyone knows of an empty apartment or house in the area, please call either Ilanit at 917-796-7865 or Batia at 917-257 1078. The family is currently living with a neighbor - obviously a Tzaddik.
Huge tragedy and I feel awful for these people. Did they not have a mortgage on the house? If they did, it would have had to have been insured.....someone should look into it in case the family is somehow missing something.
They were renting the house. And renter's insurance though a good idea is obviously optional.

Even if you're possessions are just clothing and a small amount of furniture, the value can be surprisingly high. If you can't afford renters' insurance, you can't afford to lose your existing possessions.
For what it's worth, I first bought renters' insurance afer a friend of mine lost all her possessions in an apartment fire.
Sometimes the cost is just too high for some people to afford. Yes, they can't afford to lose their possessions, but if they buy renter's insurance, they may not have enough to feed their family. Unfortunately, that is a story heard many times. Those that can ill afford to lose their possessions, can't afford to insure them either.
Renters' insurance is based on how much you want to insure. You could probably get $5000 of renters' insurance for $50-100/year. If you are enough above the poverty line to afford rent you can hopefully afford that much with some financial planning.
I know there are exceptions, but many others (including formerly myself) don't have it because they didn't think about it or realize how cheap at least partial insurance could be.

I will call and donate, but I do have a suggestion (which I will of course mention to them as well)
which can really help in this type of situation (R'L)... why not set up a paypal account for them... these days it is so easy to just click and donate...
Renter's insurance costs about $10/month. It not only covers loss -- make sure to get replacement coverage -- but also liability, important because the landlord might sue a tenant for causing a fire that destroys his building. I've been in the position of not having enough money for food, gasoline, and heat, of not having even 25 cents to spare, so I certainly know that $10/month is not nothing. I consider it, however, a fixed and necessary expense, like my rent, and if need be I cut corners someplace else for a few days, scrounging food in some other way or something. Too many people do not get renter's insurance until after such a loss. Best of luck to the family.

I think I'm going to make it a priority to get renters insurance (as well as life and disability) this week.
Also if you have a smoke dector CHECK THE BATTERY, if you don't have one, get one! TODAY!
Also, if you do not have a carbon monoxide monitor/alarm. GET ONE. They are under $100 at Costco.
A CO detector is about $25 at Costco.
You need one for every floor of your house. Especially keep one in the hall near where bedrooms are.
Food for thought: When asked to donate an item for an auction or for a raffle (which is better yet), go to Costco and buy a few smoke/CO2 detectors and throw them into the raffle. I've done this for four years now (for an annual raffle).
Although I post anonymously, those in the Five Towns know who I am by the donations I make each year. What better way to celebrate life and health than to possibly save someone else's.
I feel very bad for the family in Bayswater. Let us take this as a lesson in our own lives and those of our friends/neighbors who don't have these detectors. A great housewarming gift too!
