Sticker Shock

We got our tuition bill this week from our kids' Yeshivas. There are no words.
Anyone else out there paying upwards of 20% of their income on tuition? I'd love to hear from you so I know we're not alone...

We moved to Israel. When you factor in how much tuition we don't pay, we may be almost even on the salary scale.

Yep, we are around 20% as well.
That's why they say yeshiva tutition is the best form of birth control.

WITH 1 KID IN A LOCAL DAY SCHOOL-WE ARE PAYING OVER 20% OF OUR INCOME. BOTH HUSBAND AND WIFE WORK-HUSBAND FULL TIME-WIFE ONLY 30 HOURS A WEEK OUTSIDE THE HOME. IF WE HAD 3 KIDS-IMAGINE. NOW YOU SEE WHY 0RTHODOX IS GOING TO HAVE A TOUGH TIME CONTINUING-THE DAY SCHOOL MOVEMENT MAKES IT IMPOSSIBLE FOR MIDERATE INCOME PEOPLE. WE ARE ABOVE AVERAGE INCOME HOUSEHOLD-BUT ORTHODOXY IS BECOMING FOR THE RICH ONLY.

I think ortho evra or depo provera should advertise at Mikvahs with a big tuition bill and a sample pack for everyone who walks in.

Having served on a local yeshiva tuition committee I unfortunately have been witness to numerous instances of creative accounting (aka tax fraud) by members of our community who have "cash" businesses. On top of this many then apply for tuition reductions based on their "incomes". There are some who will be "honest" enough to admit that their tax forms don't reflect what they truly earn. They wink and offer their tzidkus up as "not wanting the yeshiva to lose out"

We haven't even gotten as far as yeshiva. I pay almost exactly fifty percent of my salary--well over half of my take-home--on my son's daycare. And he isn't at the JCC--he's at the Y, because it's $200 a month cheaper. It's about 20% of our total take-home pay. And it's just one kid. Why am I bothering working, then? Because my husband is a yeshiva teacher, and gets no health insurance. That's why.

We're at 30%...but the new tax refund from NY state should ease the pain...a tiny bit.
