More Jewish Spelling Bee Words
Here's an update to this post, about the word "hechsher" being given to a contestant in the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Steven I. Weiss points out two other words of Jewish origin that were presented to contestants in this years contest: Knaidel, and Gematrial. You'd imagine there would have to be more than enough words in the English language that they wouldn't have to look for words that are transliterations of foreign words. Especially as it's hard enough for a Hebrew-speaking person like myself to transliterate in any consistent manner.

Update: According to this, the words "Moloch", "Yizkor"and "Kaddish" also came up during the Spelling Bee.

I remember years ago hearing of a spelling bee that included "Purim" Actually, I am never sure about how Yiddish words should be spelled. I usually write "sheitel," but have also seen it written "shaitel" and to sound really Yiddish "shaytel". Another confusing one is Haimish or is it heimish or heimisch or haimisch or haymish or haymisch. Hapilly Kallah is usually spelled as I do, but chasson also appears as "choson" "chosson" "chattan" and "chossen"
Exactly! And yet the Spelling Bee people seem to think that the spelling of these Hebrew or Yiddish words is settled enough to test kids with.
You gotta be kidding! I would have spelled it "kneidel" and protested!!
In 1984, Purim was actually the winning word!
Well sometimes this is a problem, because no one tranlator is perfect... anyway at least it's very difficult to have that problem, I speak 3 leanguages, my mom, 2, my sister in law 2, the leanguages are japanese, hebrew, german and spanish.
