Why Does Al Gore Deserve the Nobel Peace Prize?
I totally understand that he has done wonders for the cause of saving the earth and I am grateful to him for that. But I still don't understand why furthering the cause of environmentalism is a matter of world peace - even after reading this. Twice. This didn't help either. Can someone explain it to me?

Liberals love Liberals.
The environmental cause is not one of altruism, championed by a bunch of liberal tree-huggers just to be political. It is about thinking of the ramifications of our current policy on the welfare of the next generation. Imagine a worst case scenario: glaciers melt, ocean levels increase dramatically and flood populous coastal cities like New York, Baltimore, Miami, etc; more frequent and greater severity hurricanes; longer heat waves and dry spells (like USA Summer '07), etc. This could very plausibly lead to hunger and famine in poorer countries but also to political instability in countries such as our own. The USA cannot afford to have a hurricane Katrina every year. If NYC or DC city got flooded, can you imagine the political consequences? If the prices of bread and water soared in America, inflation would set in, markets would become erratic and everything we've built in 250 years will slowly crumble quicker than you can say oops. Peace would then be a pipe dream and even Al Gore couldn't help us then. I think preventing the worst is worthy of a peace prize.

Most fights in the world, particularly the ones the US tends to participate in, are functions of resource allocation. Sustainable practices, then, are stabilizing in that they promote methods that minimize or nullify the effects of resource depletion, which tend to be death, destruction, and despair.
If we better used what we've been given, the world would be a more peaceful place, right?
The Truth: the Nobel prize is a meaningless "honor." Consider past recipients.
The NY Times had a pretty good article explaining the context of prizes for somethi ng like this. You still may wonder what Mr. Nobel would think of this but at least you'll understand the context.
This was his consolation prize after the 2000 election.
Given what has gone on in the world this past year, can you seriously find anyone, anywhere who actually deserved the Peace Prize based on efforts to make peace? Given that, Anonymous' explanation of why environmental protection relates to peace becomes acceptable.
Man made global warming is not an Inconvenient Truth" it's a "Convenient Lie".
Is the world warming? Yup. There's some pretty hard science that catagorically proves that it is.
What there is NO scientific proof of, however, is that MAN is causing this warming.

The environmentalist movment was a fringe left wing wacko movment that has somehow crawled it's way all the way up to legitimacy. The fact is, there are cycles to weather patterns, there always have been. They are unpredictable and there's nothing we can do about it - they (the climate cycles) are bigger than us.
I read an article recently in which the author predicted a dry spell that will produce conditions much like the dust bowl in the 1930's.
Hellooooo!! How was there a dust bowl in the 1930's?! Did we cause that too??
No! It was a pattern. It got dry. Then it got wet. In the early 1900's there were a lot of hurricanes. Then they slowed down for 20 years. Now they're back again. Patterns. Natural cycles.
There is no irrefutable science that backs the idea that man is the cause of this latest warming trend. Only theories by all knowing scientists (who need $$$ to flow to fund their little research projects).
There are plenty of reputable researchers who submit that we just don't know the cause - it is up for grabs.
A lot of hype and a lot of hysteria.

However, man's use of environmentally harmful materials and practices is a contributing factor today.It is one variable, not the only variable. It is, however, a fairly large variable. Introducing thi8s variable can change the expected weather patterns in ways we can only guess at, none of them good. "When in doubt, don't" is pretty sensible advice.
Irena Sendler, a 96 year old Polish woman who saved many Jewish children in the Holocaust was also nominated. I would have preferred she won--Gore could win it another year. I guess the committee wasn't too impressed with the fact that she saved Jews. Had she saved Arabs.....
Al Gore used his affluence and his media savvy abilities to reach the world in ways that GreenPeace, Ocean Action, the U.N., etc. have not been able to.
The marshes in Jamaica Bay are deteriorating to the point where we won't have marshes in 10 years to buffer our properties. Flooding will occur.
Congratulations to Mr. Gore. He deserves it.
Mankind is not in any way shape or form a contributing factor to global warming. We have zero serious science that stands up to proper scientific challenge to show it.
We DO have MUCH scientific evidence not to mention historical records from our fellow humans showing that the climate has been varying, and much science to show how orbital inclination, eccentricity, continental arrangement and hence ocean flow pattern arrangement, methane release, natural plant decomposition production of CO2, vulcanism, lunar orbital eccentricities, solar activity cycles, and several other things create a series of interplaying rhythms that add and subtract from each other like complex harmonics in music to create the overall changes we see.
No, this does not mean we can be totally cavalier, but do not dare to think they are altruistic in Al Gore's camp. This is just for them another method of acquiring power for themselves over us, to hem in our free will, and do what they want, and thus empower and financially enrich them.
Two problems with replacing oil/gas: one, it took millions of years for solar energy to be invested in living plants to then become oil. That is one long investment time. So, growing your fuel by putting corn everywhere is not a solution. Unless you want to grow it for millions of years to get the kind of energy density we now enjoy. I guess G-d was planning ahead when he waited on putting us down on the ground.
Two, much of our oil comes from Muslim dominated nations in the middle east, without which they have not a whole lot to offer the world and when their wealth is gone, what influence will they have then? If something is not in the offing to replace that income with to some sustainable degree, well... you think the radicalism is out of hand now... Just wait till the middle east hits their own Great Depression. Not a pretty prospect.
A global shift away from petol is happening no matter what. We need to be more cognizant of how everything interacts with everything else, and not rush in based on popular unscientific hype into non-solutions to non-existent problems that only serve to put power in the hands of more people who don't deserve it any more than the last bunch.
G-d gave you the ability to think and one should use it. As He says, believe whatever you choose to believe, but make your choices carefully.

This has got to be the worst OM post ever. Mostly, for the disingenuousness. After throwing a couple of crumbs Gore's way ("he has done wonders for the cause of saving the earth and I am grateful to him for that"), you buy into the right wing crock that Gore's movie is just alarmist hyperbole. And so what. Do you think there is any book or documentary that doesn't include a handful of errors or questionable claims? And in the end the judge allowed the movie to be used in the clasroom despite these errors, so clearly the factual errors weren't considered significant. But of course, you don't explain why these errors led you to doubt the appropriateness of the award. Nor do you explain why you simply couldn't understand the article you linked (which you read "twice") explaining quite clearly why Gore's work made him worthy of the award.
I guess that's because you're just a simple mom trying to make sense of this crazy world we live in.
